So these drives are locked at the firmware level? You can't even format them? I would love to get my hands on software to do the actual locking. Any links? |

| reply to Sweet Witch said by Sweet Witch : That depends. It they're out on the curb for pick-up, they're public property and anyone can take them (this is how police often get evidence without a search warrant). If they're on the property, it could be theft as well as trespassing. Depending on the jurisdiction, trash put out for collection can be covered under curtilage, which includes some expectation of privacy. |

| reply to M A R K Darn, when I want to get rid of old computers, I remove the drives, take them to a stump out back, and reformat the drives with a 5 pound sledge hammer ... repeatedly. Not to rain on your parade, but frankly, drives are cheap - buy your own. You can have the old computers - but my data gets scrubbed with extreme prejudice! |

These had regular plugs from the 50s or 60s. Not three-pronged or wider second prong. I wasn't about to try plugging one in -- "While you can teach an old dog new tricks, you simply can't teach him to be a cat."

| reply to M A R K Can you explain your issue a little more?
If the drives are using DriveLock, a firmware based solution that requires a password to access the drive, you're pretty much hosed.
Have you tried to wipe them with DBAN? -- When will the people realize that with DRM they aren't purchasing anything? |

| reply to M A R K Forget it. We had someone here that locked a laptop drive, and you pretty much can say goodbye to the drive.
Should not be a problem since you "found them in the trash". Perhaps there was a good REASON they were in the trash in the first place.

It's usually done in the BIOS. There are two options, the first is the BIOS password, and then if it exists, a hard drive password. This is what happened to those.
Some programs exist to unlock the drive, but from what I remember, it destroys the data. If they are found hard drives, who cares. |
