| reply to M A R K CNC machines - computer numeric control. They are used in manufacturing. Probably the hard drives were locked by the machine manufacturer to prevent access to the proprietary top secret software they use. What kind of hard drives are those? Western Digital? |

| reply to M A R K Not sure if this was mentioned already or not...
The ATA spec that allows HDs to be locked is designed for data security. There are a couple of so-called software workarounds but these are all bogus for general usage. Most of them are actually for specific situations where the master password is known (and set by the manufacturer). Xbox is one, IIRC. The only tools that work, AFAIK, are the ones that come with hardware to hook up directly to the HD... not worth the expense if you only have a couple drives!
I have also read reports of funky BIOS corruptions/etc that will erroneously set passwords... if you had the complete original machine and sales receipt, you might be able to get help from the OEM.
Anyway, I've really only seen this type of thing on laptops with BIOS support for entering passwords during POST. (I don't think Windows supports entering passwords on its own, so it's a pain in the ass to use it with desktops. There is a BIOS addon that provides this function but I don't know if it's been maintained in recent years)
In the end, just toss the drives in the recycling heap. They are dead to you. -- My Site |

The regulations we are talking about prohibit individuals from scavenging trash, not the police from searching it for evidence. |

Please read it again, it says person has no expectation of privacy once trash is on public property. If police can do it, so can anyone else. |

Ever heard the term "guard house lawyer"? Just because there is an ordinance, do not mean it's constitutional. Until something gets challenge as unconstitutional it's consider to be legal.
Please note from the link that i posted it says this "Although Greenwood had hidden the trash from view by putting in opaque plastic bags and expected it to be on the street only a short time before it would be taken to the dump, the Court believed it to be “common knowledge” that garbage at the side of the street is “readily accessible to animals, children, scavengers, snoops, and other members of the public.”
Greenwood had left the trash there expressly so that the trash collector, a stranger, could take it. Quoting Katz v. United States, the court concluded that "[w]hat a person knowingly exposes to the public, even in his own home or office, is not a subject of Fourth Amendment protection."
Also yes i am familiar with term/phrase guard house lawyer but i am not sure how it apply here being that us supreme court specifically ruled that stuff at the curb(public property) can be looked through by anyone.
It seems pretty clear what us supreme court is saying |

| reply to M A R K I'd only ever seen hard drives locked at the ATA level in original Xboxes when I modded them in previous years.
Once I had pulled an HDD out of a dead xbox and needed to use one of those programs where you had to pay $x/GB in the event of a loss of the master ATA password. It was about $2 to unlock a 10GB HDD.
Sadly I can't remember the name off the top of my head. |

| reply to meister_sd said by meister_sd :Another thought comes to mind, run the serial number of the hard drives through the manufacture and see if they are still under warranty. If they are, you should be able to get them replaced. Not very likely especially without proof of original purchase. They are at least 5 Years old or older with that size anyway. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

It seems pretty clear what us supreme court is saying It does seem clear. I clearly read that as the garbage can be accessed by anyone or anything. But what it DOESN'T say specifically is that they have the RIGHT to look through. Personally I agree, you toss it then its abandoned for anyone to take. But that ruling doesn't mean that a city can't say "no you are not allowed to snoop". |
