said by Anonymous_ :said by M A R K :I got a few 250GIG hard drives from the trash, they are all locked!! In the freaking firmware of the drive its self. NOW I MUST UNLOCK THEM!! I went online and found a few programs that claim to unlocked them but its $$$$, there must be a better way. Any ideas? I went nuts, tired to format them with, OSX, Linux, W7, Used all kinds of software. I then used a tool that told me they were locked. Then some crappy program i found told me all about the drive then wanted $150 to unlock it.. come on.. What the hell is on these drives that some one would do this crazy to lock them down like this. if it's a Western Digital the Master Password is : is here: » www.llamma.com/xbox/Unlocking%20···rive.htm If its a custom firmware highly unlikely that would exist. -- When I gez aju zavateh na nalechoo more new yonooz tonigh molinigh - Ken Lee |

| reply to Sweet Witch said by Sweet Witch :Two years ago I was cleaning out my mother's basement and found a pile of ancient power tools - so old they were solid metal with no insulation to not electrocute you. I caled the trash people, told them of the special pickup, put them out the morning requested, went back for the second box, came back out and the first box was gone - in about ten minutes! I had to laugh at that one. And then ten minutes after that they were up on E-Bay, as 'antique craftsmans tools - true collector's items'
and someone probably bought them! |

Probably, and more power to them, and the people who bought them and took their lives into their own hands -- "While you can teach an old dog new tricks, you simply can't teach him to be a cat."

| reply to psx_defector said by psx_defector :I used to make a good living grabbing hard drives from the piles of crap at flea markets, finding in warranty broken ones, and sending them off to get a new one. I am curious....what is your definition of a 'good living' in monthly income?
With new hard drive prices so cheap, I would be very surprised if someone could make more than lunch money from used ones. |

| reply to Sweet Witch When I remodeled my bathroom I threw out a cast iron tub. I had to slit it in half to get it out of the bathroom. A friend helped me get it to the dumpster we had for the demolition. When we were taking the second half out there was a guy already pulling off with the first half. I flagged the guy down and gave him the second half and let him carry out the 3 sinks I had.
The guy was so happy you would have thought that I had given him a bar of gold. I was just happy that I didn't have to break my back throwing the tub and sinks in the dumpster. |

The best things were to pick up ones that were just outside of the current hotness but well within warranty. Back when 60GBs were the rage, I was picking them up for $5 to $10 a pop. I could turn around and sell them after an RMA for $40 or $50. Sometimes you would even get really lucky and have the manufacturer send a bigger one because they didn't have any left of that size. A few 80GBs turned into 120GBs.
Either selling them outright or integrating them into systems where I was making a good margin, I would turn a thousand or so in a good month. Not bad for a weekend where I was going out to the computer sales anyways.
People have become pretty assholish when it comes to used computer parts, especially broken ones. People demand retail for their piece of crap drive and people expect you to sell that drive back to them for a nickel. Cheapasses and lowballers drove a lot of us individual sellers out of the market. It's not worth it when assholes call you up, say your prices suck, and demand you sell that drive for $5.
There's always demand for things. If I could turn a sufficient volume, I could make a ton of money on old hard drives. But gone are the days of the 150% markup. I'm lucky if I can turn 10% now with the cheapasses and lowballers. |

| reply to M A R K LOL! I pulled a nice computer from the trash the other day and all it needed was a complete restore. (the computer was stuck in a reboot mode - wouldn't go more than 10 seconds into boot) Anyway, restore, now I have a nice Window XP 2005 MCE. But dang, was this machine dirty - I never have seen so much dust. Though I am at a loss was a company would need MCE on one of their desktops. -- This message was composed using 100% post-consumer recycled electrons, please recycle responsibly.
