| Domain name/Email assistance
This is from a friend of mine who requires some assistance:
quote: Anyone know of a cheap but reputable place to host a domain? My current host is AWOL and I can't gain access to my email accounts. I have a freebie account with Hover.com using my domain name, but I can only send emails but not receive them. Presumably that's because the domain name has it look at the wrong name server. I don't want to buy emails from Hover without some assurances that they will work. I really don't need any web pages. I just want my email back.
....just to clear some other things....
I own a domain name. The guy who hosts my site is missing in action and the host no longer supports my email addresses that are tied to my domain name. I need a place to transfer my domain name to in order to reactivate my email addresses. I would gladly buy the space for email off of Hover where my domain name is registered, but I'm not sure it would work.
It's a bit of a tricky situation he's in, but he would appreciate any assistance with this matter. Anyone have any experience with Hover or any other similar services? Anyone encounter this situation before, what have you done?
My apologies if this isn't the right forum. Any assistance is appreciated. |

| reply to mike31mets One big issue here is the quality of the firm you use to host your email. I asked a friend who has a frim in the web development business, a real firm, and he recommended a n ISP. So far, so good, except that after six months I found emails being bounced because the mail server was on a black list.
I would run the mailserver's IP against all the block lists to make sure it is clean |

| reply to mike31mets It may be more a question of how involved in the administration of his site does this fellow want to be. Would he have any interest in setting up email accounts, spam filters, parked domains, FTP, or whatever else he may want to do... ...or does he just want a web host + service to do that for him.
Places like Surpass are a mere, what, $10 to $15 a month for simple packages, including email. I'm sure he could probably find even cheaper. If he wants some help managing the site, he may consider a reseller for the same or slightly higher cost.
The biggest issue I see is hoping this person has the domain actually in their name. No transfer problem if so, but if the host owns the domain, good luck getting it transferred if they're AWOL.
There are definitely plenty of places to get hosting in a variety of costs and service levels. 'Cheap' is relative and 'Reputable' can be a trick.
I do all my hosting at Surpass. Rochen before that. I moved solely due to a site promotion from Surpass. I've been generally pleased with both hosts. KM -- Don't Lie - Be Kind - Realize your Potential |
