Wolfie00 posted : I think that means anyone planning to rely on either the Seagate or WD version of Acronis had better make sure they can boot the recovery disk!!

The good news is that backwards compatibility should mean that the Acronis 2010 (or Acronis 2009) recovery CD should be able to recover Seagate or WD backups, even if their own recovery disks don't work.

Meanwhile I'm still struggling to come up with a completely satisfactory backup solution that is common to Windows XP, Windows 7, and BartPE (WinPE). The additional problem is that although Acronis has had a generally excellent reputation in the past and my experience has built up a lot of confidence in them, they seem to have a habit of producing buggy stuff every second major release -- i.e.- Acronis TI Home V.10 = good, V.11 = buggy, 2009 (and presumably Seagate and WD products) = good, 2010 = buggy again!

If only V.10 had worked under Windows 7 everything would be great! As it is, I'm currently dealing with my Windows 7 system backups using V.10 running under a BartPE boot disk.
--
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" -- a corollary of Murphy's Law
"A dog is like a child who never grows old ... always there to love and be loved" -- Aaron Katcher

Cajun Man posted : Well, I installed the Seagate Diskwizard, and I had no problems imaging the C: drive of my Dell Studio 1745 laptop to the Seagate external drive.

I had it make a bootable cd so if I couldn't boot to Windows I could boot the cd to restore if I ever needed to.

Well when I try to boot the cd on the laptop, I get the menu to choose between the Disk Wizard or boot to Windows. I choose disk wizard and I get a screen full of text that stops and it just sits there. Won't do anything.

Tried booting the cd on my HP desktop and after picking Disk Wizard, it goes right to the program starting up and I can pick backup or restore or clone disk.

For some reason it'll boot correctly on the HP, but not the Dell laptop.

I even hooked the Seagate to the HP and booted into Windows 7 Pro and installed the Disk Wizard there and created a new cd on the HP.

Same thing the cd boots fine on the HP, but not the Dell laptop. Thing is there is an option to add commands when making the cd, like nousb, noapic etc, but what command would I use to have it boot? I need usb, so the nousb is not going in, but not knowing what is killing the boot and I can't remember the last line of the text I do get.

So I uninstalled the Disk Wizard from the laptop and installed Macrium Reflect and created a boot cd (chose Linux) on it, and did a backup of C: drive on the Dell to the Seagate external HD, and then booted that cd.

This cd boots on both the Dell laptop and HP desktop. The only thing is it only gives option to restore the image to the hd.

I was hoping it could do both create image and restore image, but at least this one boots up on the laptop.

Now on this laptop there are 3 partitions, 1 visible and 2 hidden. 1 is a 16-bit FAT called dellutils, then there is a NTFS called RECOVERY, and finally the NTFS C:\OS. I assume the dellutils is what boots up when I do a F8 and pick the restore option above the SAFE mode entry.

The backup that came with Win 7 when I chose to create image, it would image both RECOVERY and C:.

So my question is should I do an image with Reflect image both RECOVERY and C: and should I include the FAT-16 dellutils as well? And if I do image all 3, do I choose all in 1 image, or should I make 3 separate images, 1 for dellutils, 1 for RECOVERY and 1 for C:?

I wish the Seagate DiskWizard cd would have worked on this laptop as I would have liked to boot to it to do the backups as well as restore. I guess I could try on the HP to make another cd and try adding some of the suggested commands, and see if one of them would allow the cd to boot on the laptop.
--
Squeeze Dat Box T-Boy!
