| [Rant] Airlines charging for seat selection
GRRRRRRRR.
I just booked a couple of tickets on British Airways for a flight in late December.
Last time I did this, you could reserve seats at the time of booking.
Now they want you to pay (an unspecified sum of money, as far as I can tell - can't even find out whether it's worthwhile without phoning) to reserve seats more than 24 hours in advance.
Money-grubbing bastards. |

| reply to dave On southwest you can pay $10 to take cuts in the boarding line. book early enough and you can get the coveted "A" spots. - On united you can pay $249 to make the checked bag fees[first two bags] go away. - worthless info: since the industry started with bag fees, $3,600,000,000.00 in bag fees collected in the six months following their inception. -- When I gez aju zavateh na nalechoo more new yonooz tonigh molinigh - Ken Lee |

Really, 3.6 billion?
I thought with Southwest, check-in was exactly 24-hours in advance and at that time you get assigned a place in line. -- My BLOG! Black Friday Ads |

| reply to dave On our last American flight(s) we did the check in at the airport. Then we went to the ticket counter and asked them to change our seats to the exit row when we got there. They made the change on both flights coming and going at no charge.
It might have helped that we were there really early. -- Team Discovery |

| Meh, I fly a lot of SWA flights and I have always gotten a window seat by just checking in 24 hours in advance without the early bird option. Many of those flights were 90-100% full by the way. -- This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. |

It might have helped that we were there really early. I've been doing this for years. I don't bother with e-check-in, but I do ask nicely if I could have a better seat.
I usually go get a nice front window or aisle. I prefer aisle. |

By asking for the change another couple got split up and had our old assigned seats. The airlines want those planes crammed to the overheads these days. -- Team Discovery |

That's very disturbing to hear, int other words, if you are flying with someone and would like to sit together, you have to make special arrangements for this? |

| The seats were booked for us by a travel agent so she didn't care about anything but getting us on the plane. The airlines certainly don't care, they just want those planes as full as they can get them.
What she suggested was for us ask at the ticket counter if they could seat us together and we upped it by asking for the exit aisle seat for the extra bit of leg room.
They booked us that way for both flights and we managed to do the same on the return trip
The fact that we were at the airport at 4AM for a 6AM flight and we happened to be there before everyone else may have had something to do with it.
You can also ask at the gate how much it will be to upgrade to first class. The better half has done that and scored first class from DC to LA for $50 upgrade. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. -- Team Discovery |
