[Notebooks] Keeping the battery in or leaving it out

Is keeping the battery in your notebook all the time going to eventually kill the battery? Is it a good idea to take the battery out of the notebook when you know that you're going to be on AC power for a long time?

I had left the battery in my old HP pavilion for almost 3 years with no ill effects other then replacing the battery once after it would no longer hold a substantial charge. I just replaced it after 5 years and use my new one as a desktop leaving the battery in with no issues.

Keep in mind if the power goes out your battery should kick in and if the AC is out long enough to drain the battery depending on your Power Options the notebook should enter hibernation or sleep mode.
After AC is restored of course the battery should start recharging.

There are some half-dozen odd threads on this subject, not too far below your thread. Check 'em out, they are all pretty much the same:

"Theories" abound on notebook battery life, but the reality is that you will get from 1 to 4 years of decent run time, with the average closer to two to three years, and regardless of what you do, the overall life span of the battery probably will not change much.

Maybe I am "lucky", but I usually get a good 3+ years out of a notebook battery, pretty much regardless of any battery-preservation measures...so I no longer bother. I do just as well leaving the battery plugged in, and I run on AC the vast majority of the time.

The manufacturers tend to lean towards having you remove your battery when on AC, but frankly, I have seen no discernable improvement on battery life by doing so.

The only time I ever remove the battery outside of replacing it is if I am not going to be using my computer for longer then a month.

I always leave mine in because of power outages in summer here where I live. My dell would get hot and the battery would get hot, but was always on a cooler.
My new hp, doesnt get that hot and the battery never gets hot, also on a cooler...a crappy one thats too small for this 17in notebook.

I started taking the battery out of the dell when it stayed permantly connected wired and permantly afixed to docking station as desktop replacement when I heard of batter's blowing up....never actually seen this happen with any battery cept' once with a car battery.

I run a T61 which is two years old and reports 3.3% battery wear; the battery is always plugged in and it's mostly always connected to the mains.

Heat kills batteries. Recharging creates heat. Heat kills batteries.
