Anyway to "fix" my ping??

I'm having major problems with my ping that really affects my ability to do any online gaming (xbox 360). First off I want to say I know nothing about setting up a or fixing a connection so be gentle I have a Speedstream 6520 gateway, is there a better choice, would a different modem make a difference? I've already tried connecting to the network interface directly to make sure I don't have any problems with my wiring inside my house. I spoke to the phone tech and he basically said I was SOL and my want to look for a different ISP. Problem is frontier is the only broadband available. The tech had me ping yahoo.com through the command prompt with dismal results. It was about 5PM so traffic was probably heavy but that doesn't explain 97ms best 922ms worst with an average of 258ms. Here's a capture, probably the best I've seen taken at 11AM on a Sunday.

Can you perform a trace route to www.google.com for me? Also if you can, can you register on this website, go to this site's Tools section and perform a line quality test? If you're using the SpeedStream modem that Frontier provides make sure you disable the firewall in the modem for the line quality test to work completely. If your modem is bridged and you have a router, make sure it's set to allow ICMP traffic.

I found your complete line quality test. The problem seems to be on Frontier's end. If I'm not mistaken, Frontier is pretty much out of bandwidth at your CO in which case you and a bunch of other people need to get them to add more bandwidth. This is shown by the big spike at the end of the reverse trace routes, as well as in your trace route starting at the second hop. This is all pretty much the problem, given you weren't using the Internet while that test was being performed (as in downloading/uploading anything for more than a second).

I wasn't uploading or downloading anything. I started the test and came back 20 minutes later. Thanks for the confirmation that it's bandwidth the phone tech thought that was the problem. With Frontier being the only game in town for broadband I'm not sure how much pressure could be put on them to increase bandwidth, especially if it would involve upgrading infrastructure.

Yep. The same thing happened in my area as well, except that we have cable throughout my entire area. The company is Time Warner and they do sell 15Mbps/2Mbps service. At the time they were having bandwidth problems of their own. Frontier did fix up service basically a week or two after I called up tech support letting them know about night time slow downs. In my case, Frontier knew they had to increase bandwidth however they were waiting on a new fiber line to come into the CO, which was having some delays for whatever reason.

Otherwise, see if you can find out any information, especially from the local techs if there are any plans to bring in more bandwidth.

Talk to my local tech today, he kept trying to tell me I needed a different filter and line direct to my modem even after I explained that I hooked my modem directly to the network interface. After a couple of more times he finally said he would talk to his supervisor about it. I'm not holding my breath!

a new filter or modem won't make any difference.

Same as they are doing here in WV, expect an upgrade at the CO soon for more bandwidth to be available to all the users in the area.

a little thread necromancy here we're having the same problems here in Canton PA, not in the mood to post up my ping/tracert results. the 1st hop is always not great 40-50ms although it at least doesn't fluctuate a lot. Where our biggest problem seems to be at is 2nd hop which is a piece of their equipment in Rochester NY pinging it's address can give mixed results extreme highs and lows through pinging it a few times within 5min and definitely fluctuating with the hours of the day.

I too contacted Frontier about the matter and spoke with the local tech about it and was told there should be an immediate fix coming to our location soon along with plans for "in the near future" upgrading our equipment to get us above 1mb/256 speeds. also notified him of my interest in having my line mode checked and set to fast packet if possible and not already set that way along with passed on the information about the equipment that I'm showing to be the problem. they said they would look into it and i asked to be notified of what came of checking the line via email. (I'm currently working 6days/12hrs/day so not able to talk to them too often)

been a week still no reply. however was informed that the person who handles most of that level stuff was off for the week.

Here's to hoping as i would much like to get back to playing FPS games in my small amount of free time

P.S. if you're still following this thread i would be interested in any followups as it looks like it's been just about 1 month since you were informed of this. Also did you contact Frontier to confirm that your CO would also be receiving an upgrade?
