Magic Jack with linux and windows

If you use linux all the time, but have Magic Jack as you phone service. The best way to solve this, without paying any extra cost or time. Just dual partition windows and linux. Use Linux for everything you want as a primary operating system. Then, when you are getting off your computer or want to call someone, switch over to windows to use it as a phone. Ta da! lol.

Only when you're in linux, YOU HAVE NO PHONE!
a better way: thin client, they're pretty cheap on ebay and all set up for MJ.

Google Voice + Gizmo + any SIP client allows you to make and receive phone calls with any OS. You don't have 911, but you can add your local emergency numbers as contacts and call them directly and give your address (which is probably faster than rebooting). Or if you need instant 911, use a thin client as dvd536 suggested.

AFAIK no one has gotten it to work in Wine, though some people have come close. It does work in virtual Windows. In fact, I have it working this way using VirtualBox, though only with a headset, not a regular phone. Hence I use the dongleless setup. The sound quality isn't as good as with real Windows, maybe because the guest doesn't have the full resources of the host.

yea I am thinking it's probably just a Windows type of device. It would be interesting if they developed a linux and MAC version.

It already supports Intel Macs. There was a promise of Linux support in the 3rd quarter of this year, which was dropped. I checked their website and now the answer to "Will magicJack work with Linux?" is "Not yet. We expect to offer Linux support the first quarter of 2010." Maybe in a few years they'll actually have it, assuming they're still in business. The easy way out for them would be to just tweak the Windows version so it works under Wine.
