Tidy cable layout by Comcast

Click for full size
Beautiful isn't it?
I started working for a private security company recently and part of my job is to inspect rooms while on foot patrol. Last night I was assigned to a high a rise and noticed every floor had a room like this. All were very tidy and I was so impressed, I had to snap a shot of one the rooms with the phone.

Company i work for has their own cable crew who wires all new buildings. Cable company just hands off a feed in the main phone room. Here is an example of some of their work.

Cooldude... That last one is some serious sexyness!

How long will it last like that however is the scary question.

P.S. Do most of these places leave the punch tool on the wall like the first pic? Lordy that would just scream STEAL ME! Most places I know people would steal the screws if they weren't chained down somehow. (And many of these happen to be from the techs, not by the people in the building, to make things worse)

We handle all support and work in house, but the remote locations have no "techs" on staff. Any emergency work would be done by walking them through the given task (yes they leave a punchdown at each site). Any routine work would be done on a maintenance trip.
So since mainly the only people who touch it are the ones who set it up, it pretty much always stays in good condition.

Also all equipment rooms have a camera in them that takes pictures due to PCI/Credit card requirements, so if anything did get taken there would be a record of it.

ill find a few more good ones.

The place I patrolled has these rooms locked. Normally I just check to make sure the door is locked and secured. The other night I got curious (the management gives us keys to access everything) and took a bigger peak inside.

In that second pic, why are they using 50 pair blocks like that. All the green/brown pairs are just twisted together. Why no cross connection and access to all the pairs?

cat5e cable used for phone, so you dont need all the pairs and it would take extra pairs up to the MDF to cross connect them. Green/brown can be used for spairs down the road if needed.

I understand that. When I punch down cat 3 cable I punch down all 4 pairs. I only cross connect the pair I need. You are likely wasting pairs unless every single jack needs two pairs.

This is a hotel/motel setup and i know most of the phones are 2 line phones, so it would take 2 pairs. There may be other reasoning behind i, but i deal more with the network side of things so im note sure off hand.

Are you sure it's an actual 2 line phone, or a phone system that requires 2 pairs for a digital phone?

It looks like that motel is injecting HBO into the local cable plant to avoid having to pay for it on all the receivers. nice.

they are simple hotel teledex phones with a line 1 and line 2 button.

Not exactly. As i said this is a hotel setup, and in our case there are no recievers in the rooms. Cable companies do not offer analog HBO anymore, only digital. So because of that they insert HBO into a standard analog channel. The equipment is provided by the cable companies and the channel is paid for every room. This is pretty much standard with time warner, comcast, charter, ect.

not that it matters, but it isn't a punch down tool. it is part of a toner kit that they use to trace wire.

Ummm dude, I own like 5 of those punch tools and a few tone kits. It's a punch tool, not a tone tracer.

EDIT - Whoops I see the tracer in the first pic. I was referring to the yellow punch tools in the last few sets.

Even in locked rooms here, any subcontracted telco guy would come in and pilfer the punch tools or whatever wasn't securely bolted to the walls. It's fucking terrible here, and I don't live in any kind of ghetto, it's a small rural country cottage town. There's so many people in and out of rooms like that in buildings that it's impossible to keep track of... Bell, phone tech, electrician, alarm guy, network dude, random computer geek, cable guy, all of which wouldn't mind adding a 100$+ punch tool to their toolbox.

What brand CATV equipment is in the very first post? Amp, splitter and taps? Are there tap values on the faceplates?

I'd be curious to look up that amp model number and see what it's bandwidth is ) 750 MHz, 860 MHz, 1 GHz.

I'm not too sure, nothing was labeled in there. If I get assigned to that property again I can take a closer look or check one of the other rooms. Every floor at this place has one of these rooms so I'm sure one of them should labeled.
