| reply to Dentist Re: Borderlands? Anyone picking this up?
been playing since launch. i have a lvl 26 zerker and a 17 siren.
this is the 1st game i've purchases digitally that i wish i had a manual for. one probably exists through steam but i havent looked. there's a lot of shit they took from RPGs/MMOs like damage type immunities/resistances/weaknesses that took me a LONG time to realize. also my siren was the 2nd char i played through alpha skags and it wasnt until i out-levelled them that i saw the tip about shooting them in the rear. i had no idea there were strong/weak parts of enemies besides headshots. this makes it even more of a true FPS where your real skill makes more of a difference than the character's skills.
once you hit 18-20 you can leave the starter zone and go to a new one with new creatures and some extra types of gameplay (like car battles).
i have no idea what the level cap is or how long the game is, but the 1st zone is definitely the same as the noob zones in an MMO.
the consolitis is EXTREMELY annoying, though. it doesnt affect gameplay too much, but it affects menus, vending machines, etc.
•you need to edit config files to disable voice - i think that's b/c consoles largely use voice activation •the FOV is RIDICULOUSLY low. it almost gives me a headache. this is definitely from consoles •the default "accept"/buy/confirm/etc key is [ENTER] ...can you say "button x" ?? •there's a reload key, r by default, and then action/use, e, also reloads when there's nothing to use... KTHX CONSOLES •pagedown/up to scroll quest text...what? •crouch is a toggle with no easy way to change it...THX CONSOLES •p2p connections = need ports open = WTFTHXCONSOLES. lag is noticeable when playing with my friends b/c we're across the country. on a dedi server, it wouldnt be bad at all, just slightly higher pings for some. now everyone but the host has high ping. •Randy Pitchfork promised us the game was developed for PC and being ported to consoles....what a FUCKING LIAR. it was delayed 6 days on PC and still wasnt ready •there's probably a lot more that i forgot.
besides that, it's really awesome. seriously. my fps does suck, though. 40-62 (62 is max for UE3 engine by default for a 60hz monitor), but it dips into the 30's quite often. i blame this solely on my gfx card, HD5870, since it was more than likely completely untested and unoptimized in BL. hopefully a patch fixes this.
btw, Q6700 @ 3.6ghz, 8GB ram, hd5870 1gb, windows 7 64, latest catalysts. played @ 1080p with max in-game quality. i didnt force anything in CCC or did any config tweaks to enable vsync or FSAA or anything. -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

| the consolitis is EXTREMELY annoying, though. it doesnt affect gameplay too much, but it affects menus, vending machines, etc. Yeah it is.
I'm still struggling to understand simple things like how to properly compare guns....I'm sure it's intuitive to somebody who has an X button to press...
I like the game quite a bit. I do think some of the skill trees are boring. You should get some entirely new powers when you reach 20 or 30.....instead you get a few % point better crits, or an additional bullet in your ammo clip. |

| One beef from me so far:
Starting area mob AI sucks! They essentially stand there, or path very predictably, making it very easy to kill whatever is there.
Other than that and the consolitis, it's fun.
However, it does remind me of hellgate and so far play kinds of similarly (minus the cookie dough streets and mazes). -- "Vision without funds.... is a hallucination" |

i agree about the skill trees, too. they're all generally bland. hardly any skills really stand out. some of them are very powerful, or powerful in combination with others, but there's nothing to look forward to in any class' tree. even the bottom skills are nothing special for the 2 classes ive played. -- Somnambulator - t3h 5133pw41k3r

1 edit | reply to Dentist I just want to add that it's possible to tweak a number of settings - why this wasn't included in the default GUI, I don't know (well, I do - because the game was clearly made for consoles).
I'm at work so I can't get there at the moment, but the official forums have a number of input commands , including ones to change the FOV and switch to third person. There is no working console, so the commands have to be bound to a key, but it made the game playable for me, and now it's a ton of fun (a FOV of 70 or 75 or whatever the default is on a decent widescreen monitor is just... terrible. Makes me ill.)
I think this is and Dragon Age is going to tie up a lot of my time in the near future.

| reply to Dentist Haha, so another update from me.
I actaully beat the game this weekend. Ended up at level 36 (the last boss is level 35, so this made it a bit easier).
Found that doing some editing in the ini files made things alot easier. (»forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=18172.0)
It's got some fixes for FOV and mouse smoothing etc.
Once you finish, you can play through again, keep all your goodies, and eveything gets boosted to match your level.
Also saw someone looking on how to do compares on equipment. Hit the letter E when your in a vending machine and you can compare to any slot, or other vending slots as well. |

My only complaint is that when the hosting player quits out, we all end and have to find another server.
This may be the norm in other games, but it is really really annoying. |

| I think the main problem is figuring out the right weapon to use on most of the enemy's and bosses.Sometimes you just have to find a good hiding spot or vantage point if your not strong enough. I had hard spots while playing and would die over and over and then I 'd get some good weapons and armor and sail thru a lot of areas.I'm level 26 and just hit a hard spot.Seems like a lot of red lazer canons eating me up and my shield isn't holding up very well as I try to shoot with rocket launcher or sniper rifle even if I hide.Lost a bunch of money but finally got thru.I think I'd needed a better strategy but kind of tried to force it to much. The game is a lot of fun.Reminds me of DIABLO II with the finding of weapons ,ammo.money.Its very well done. |

I don't know what class your playing but I'm playing the hunter and i pretty much play the duck and cover game.Get a gun that drops there shields then go over to your real DMG guns.I switch out Class mods/shields all the time in a fight as well. -- "It's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."-George Carlin

2 edits | reply to Dentist For bonehead, try to lure him out towards one of the barrels and blow them, should help a good amount.
Hunter is pretty much the most OP class in that game, especially when you build the tree that buffs Bloodwing, Bird of Prey + Carrion Call will pretty much make you unstoppable. |

| would also have to highly recommend this game. one of the best FPS ive played in a long time. has a good level of difficulty, and highly customizable character options is awesome.
ive currently got a 24 soldier, and i dont see how any of the other characters can compare. i started a hunter as well, and bloodwing dosent seem near as powerful as the scorpio turret. he just attacks 1 guy then leaves, while the turret can gun down multiple opponents, and also provides a shield to hide behind. |

| reply to Tehuno So can Bloodwind, if you put the points in it. Includes the fact that it is a one hit kill and that once sniper is developed on the hunter, he also is a one hit kill machine.
All the characters have great strengths. I love bricks melee (with explosions included makes very short work of whatever he goes for). Heck, got that Zagzilla with melee only at 23. Was fun too -- "Vision without funds.... is a hallucination" |

| im normally a huge sniper fan, but with so many of the skaag packs that rush you, sniping isnt the best situation for that, which is why i love the machine gun style of the soldier. i killed skagzilla at 22-23, had to dump about 50 shotgun rounds into him(purple shotgun).
i looked at the hunter talent trees, must have overlooked the talent that lets bloodwing attack multiple times.
has anyone played much with the siren chick? wonder how cool her phasewalk ability is. |
