I find myself using it more for it's media features than gaming... I don't game as much as I used to back in the day.

Somewhere on the Net I have seen a HD USB tuner then a Linux live DVD was ran to display the video. -- Avatar by: dandelion | Disarm you with a smile. | Tell me, tell me what you're after. | Have mine liked to a Linux box running Media tomb and all of my DVD's that have been ripped for the iPod/iPhone play nice. They even look good on my little 26in (720P) television. I have to say, I had been a bit worried about spending the money on the PS3, but it was worth it. Blue Ray Audio/Video/Photo streaming Haven't tried in a while, but I used to be able to watch Hulu on it. -- Retaking our country one election at a time.

| | You have a ps3 so it won't help you. But the xbox 360 is a media center extender. So if you have a media center computer the xbox can be used to watch tv in a different room or downloaded videos.
Of course most people probably have the xbox on the same tv as their media center, so the features go unused.

| | | Re: What I would kill to have on the PS3... There are media servers out there for the PS3 as well that do all that as well. The real deal maker for me would be if any of these consoles would start becoming DVRs themselves (maybe with a TV tuner add on) instead of just relaying data from another machine. | |

That's exactly what I want too... I already use TVersity with my PS3, I just would love to have the PS3 as a standalone DVR with dual tuners... Heaven...

This wouldn't require a semi-proprietary add-on piece of hardware for every console wanting to do it. It would simply require software modifications to permit access via the network.
I've been using an HD HomeRun for months and it works great with Vista and Win7 Media Center.
Mine's got two tuners allowing two people to watch different programs simultaneously on different PCs anywhere on the network (read: anywhere within range of my wi-fi in the house). I've found the HD HomeRun to be a lot less hassle than installing a tuner card in my HTPC and I get the added benefit of using it with notebooks that don't have tuner cards. -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com

| fireflierCoffee. . .Need CoffeePremium join:2001-05-25 Limbo | Huh? PS3 is DLNA and UPnP capable. Works fine with Twonky, Tversity, and PlayOn. It even sees my DirecTV HR-21 boxes (though DirecTV won't allow anything to access them).
I've been streaming netflix to my PS3 via a PC running PlayOn for months.
The only change this NetFlix release makes for me is it will go directly to the PS3 now rather than through a separate PC.
Even so, PlayOn makes my music, movies, and photos available on the PS3. For that matter, if I'd allowed UPnP and Microsoft's media server service to run (I turned them off), the PS3 could access my music and videos that route. I preferred to use TVersity and PlayOn for the additional features. -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com

It's difficult to tell from what I've found via Google, but does PS3 Media server support clients other than the PS3? It appears it would if it's DLNA and UPnP compliant, but I haven't read anything in what I've found yet that it readily supports other DLNA and UPnP platform devices other than something that seems to suggest beta support for the Xbox 360?
As far as connecting to the MS Media Server, with PS3 Media server it would be redundant since the PS3 Media server would be performing the same function--streaming local media to the PS3. Since I used TVersity for that, I didn't need the MS Media serving capabilities, hence my reason for disabling them.
What feature sets does it have as far as other connectivity? Does it stream Netflix? Amazon VOD? Hulu? YouTube? Does it handle Plug-Ins to allow access to other material? I've got some Plug-ins for PlayOn that give me access to Sci-Fi, Comedy Central, and other "channels" for their programs.
I've never used PS3 Media Server so I honestly don't know what it can and can't do. -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com

Short answer is no. It's all about connecting your PC to the PS3 and nothing more. It does this very well and supports a host of video options. But it's not going to stream NetFlix or any other application (maybe the PS3 build in browser can do Amazon?). I have been using it for months and have used it to access videos, music, photos stored in my PC to view/listen on my home entertainment system.

If PS3 Media provides the services you want, awesome, but PlayOn does provide some additional capabilities that (apparently) PS3 Media does not and that's worth $40 to me for the program plus free upgrades. In fact, I primarily bought it for streaming NetFlix to my PS3 at the time figuring the PS3 would eventually do it natively. Since then, they've added some additional capabilities to it that are worthwhile. It also supports my DirecTV HR-21s (mostly) as well as other DLNA and UPnP devices.
I may be remembering incorrectly, but I think I paid $30 for PlayOn--but then, I got quite some time back. Maybe they've refined it and placed higher value on it. Even so, I'm still getting free upgrades and they're still adding features.
My suspicion is they'll be working harder to add even more features now that they're learning that they'll be losing those potential customers who want it only for PS3 Netflix streaming. -- Tradition: Just because you've always done it that way doesn't mean it's not incredibly stupid. --despair.com
