Wii *can* play DVD, but nintendo doesn't want it to by default. it's not a hardware issue that it can't do it for.
my guess on this is they're holding out so they can say streaming netflix is another new feature of the next-yet-to-be-announced-but-highly-speculated-2010-release wii. of course there's also speculation that there won't actually be a new wii release in 2010, but instead will be a hardware "upconvert" which allows new features... (which, even though netflix could happen on the unit now, could still be added as a feature of even an 'upconvert'). |

 | reply to ender7074 It doesnt matter what the reason is, whether it be hardware, software, or the weather. (Though I did not know it was restricted in the US).
The point is plain and simple: I cannot put a DVD into my Wii and play it. I have to have another external DVD player connected to my TV to watch a DVD without having the modify the system beyond the basic menu options provided by the manufacturer. |
