Millenicom up and running today!!!

Took a few weeks to do all the research, most of it through EV DO tips and tweaks, THANK YOU Jim! And this forum but the antenna finally arrived today and it is up and running. My initial signal is around -69 to -72 dBm, was up in the mid to high 100's before the installation of the HG2424G antenna.

Haven't done much tweaking yet, but I was able to finally download all of my Adobe CS4 updates, 700MB worth in two hours. Just tried to DL driver updates for my computer using the Hughsnet Satellite, 75MB was going to take more than two hours.

Ordered the CradlePoint CTR-350 from the 3Gstore today and will tie it into my Dlink gigabit router when it arrives. After 4 years of unbelievably bad service, I finally see some light at the end of the tunnel, I’m not declaring victory yet, I still want to do a bit more testing first but so far everything is looking real good. Thanks again to Jim at EV DO tips and tweaks

Nice antenna!

By the way, what device are you using?

Sorry about that, I'll eventually get all my stuff in my page settings. I'm using what Millenicom gave me a Franklin CDU 680, I chose unlimited Sprint, After doing a tower search there isn't much down here, I found the Sprint tower across the water in Saint Mary’s County, MD about 8 miles from my house. Also did a complete rotation around my house and that tower was it.

Just did two one on Hughsnet and one on Sprint. The Hughsnet numbers are actually good for this time of night

Maybe I'm making more of this than warranted, but it seems like there are enough of us ex-Hughes and currently MBB customers (whether Sprint, VZ, AT&T, etc) out here to justify our own forum!

Your results and experience with this are just like lots of other users here...I see this time and again: "I was a pissed-off HN customer and.....now on Millenicom (or SP, VZ, etc)"

video, I see you are using the Wichita server for the SpeedTest.net tests. Most of the time you will see better overall tests using the Kansas City or Springfield Missouri servers. For some reason the Wichita server always returns higher ping times for me.

I agree, the Wichita server is notoriously slow. Congrats video, on having a much better net experience than HughesNet (came from WildBlue myself). Ain't that NO FAP a blessing?

BTW I still get flyers in the mail from Hughes ... I laugh as I throw them in the trash.

I'm also a very happy ex-hughes "victim".

I had HN back in the beginning when it was called DirecPC and a person needed a dial up account due to the satellite only providing the downlink. Every year, the service would get worse regardless of how sophisticated the two way modems became.

What would get me is that there were a few folks on the HN forum who would always defend HN. Seemed that no matter how bad an experience someone was having, one of these HN cheerleaders would show up and talk about how great the system worked for them and that if someone was having a problem then it HAD to be related to how the dish and modem were setup.

There was basically nothing wrong with HN or the equipment. The problem was Too many subscribers for the amount of bandwidth the satellites could provide. This was especially true as the west coast woke up. The speeds in the early morning hours were fine. Too many couldn't understand this thinking it was dish, modem or software.

A lot of businesses in my area especially quick stops and even Walmart use HN for their transactions.

Surely you can't say there was nothing wrong with HN's "customer service"?

Talking to those folks was nothing more than an insult to the customer's intelligence.

I realize that the tech support for most companies have become pretty shoddy, but HN tech support was pretty much a waste of time for about that first 5 or 6 hours of talk time.

Jack, the HN commercial systems are good systems, according to my friend who install these. Plus, they are only using a 'burst' transmission of data that takes an eyeblink to comlete, not hours of streaming video, etc. They actually lease just a short time slot for transmission of data and that's it. The data usually gets sent late at night and is a summary of that day's business. It's not a 'real-time send every transaction as it happens' system. The credit card validations usually use POTS.

If that's all we ex-HN folks were doing with our systems, we'd probably still be on HN.

I do totally agree with you that the over-saturation of the bandwidth, plus the expectations that you could stream all day and night were what drove down performance. Plus the stupid 200Mb/day FAP was so limiting, especially if you had a major upgrade to do. I won't even mention their so-called tech support.

Yes no FAP is a wonderful thing, and it is thanks to your help and website Jim_in_VA that I finally got off my butt and got MBB working in my area. I changed my Home Address to 68.28.121.76, New York and I now use the New York or Washington, DC severs to run my speed test.

Basically the way Hughsnet works is first sell the service then launch the bird! They can fill up all of their transponders then after they get their new bird in orbit start moving those poor folks to the new transponders, they could even tell them that they need to upgrade their gear to say an HN9000 (for a new cost and a new 24 month contract) to get better speeds. I read that they have a new launch set for 2011. You have to keep in mind it is cheaper to build a tower and run some T1 lines to it then it is to launch a new satellite. Broadband will come to the rural areas and Walmart and 7-11 can keep their Hughsnet systems for themselves. I personally think that satellites are on their way out communication wise in favor of fiber. Most of our internet coming from the far east is coming in on fiber lines laid accoss the Pacific Ocean.

Low earth orbit satellites could fill the bill for hard to reach rural areas. They just need a lo-cost launch system to get many small birds in the sky. The Orbital Gun Launch Systems could make it possible some day. »nextbigfuture.com/2009/10/orbita···gas.html

I would be O.K. with a low-latency, high speed satellite solution as long as they don't RIP ME OFF like Hughes did. For me, it all ended with a lovely Better Business Bureau report, whereafter Hughes told me to take my business elsewhere. I did, and I've never been happier.

Belinrahs, I sympathize with you completely. I had similar negative experiences with HN, and it wasn't until I called corporate headquarters and demanded to speak to the office of the president that any resolution emerged.

I did get handed off to one of the prez's admin assistants. I told him that one way or another, this problem was going to get resolved; either he could fix it or I would just conveniently lose the credit card to which it was billed and they could chase my happy ass in Puerto Rico. After that, he was very nice, he connected me to one of their top tech guys, who was unable to produce any significant improvement in performance, and so the admin assist volunteered to let me out of my contract AND refund to me $400 towards what I had paid ($700) for the upgrade to 7000 which proved useless. I accepted in a heartbeat and now I have MCom and it's just so much more reliable, faster, less tinkering, portable, etc, etc.

Congrats for getting off of HN.

I dealt with the ECC of HughesNet a few times and never came to a complete resolution of the issue until after going through the BBB and my state's Attorney General's office. That resolution was to scrap the contract with no ETF and get rid of them.

Yes, they overcrowded their transponders which caused a slowdown for most of the day / evening, but it was more than that as quite a few people pointed out and posted about.

I'd have stuck with StarConnect (the satellite system I had previous to Hughes, was 1-way but much better performance) had I known the issues I'd have with HughesNet, but it wasn't until after I got HN that I found these forums.

Anyways, I'm happy that I have the EVDO I do now, and am also glad that I was pointed to Millenicom.

I could probably say the same exact words! ECC's solving of a problem they know exist is basically getting rid of you. Poor William!
I have had no issues with Millenicom and its the best move I ever made for the area I live in!
