But did you know that if you pull a construction sign down you can get a ticket or even go to jail. There was a UTC employee who did such a event. He got tired of seeing the sign in his front lawn and pull it down and destroyed it. But one of his neighbors reported him to the police and he landed in jail and also lost his job at UTC.

DrStrange posted : If you didn't give anyone permission to post the signs on your property, they have no business being there. Technically, the person who put them there was trespassing.

If you want to go by the book, call the PD and tell them what happened. They'll come over, you can help the officer fill out some paperwork and the PD will call the campaign office for the candidate named on the sign and have them remove the signs.

In practice, I've had this done to me as well. I didn't call anyone. I just removed the signs and stored them in the garage. No one ever knocked on the door or called asking what happened.

Unless there's a local law about defacing campaign signs, I assume you can do anything you want with [or to] the signs since they were put on your property illegally. It might be interesting/amusing to post an addendum to the sign so it reads:

"JOE SMITH FOR COUNCIL
put this sign in my yard without permission!
What will he do to the town if we give him permission?".

If there is a local law about defacing campaign signs, I'm not familiar with the existing case law on that subject. Moreover, I'm not a lawyer. Let your conscience [and possibly your sense of moral outrage and/or humor] be your guide.

cowboyro posted : Maybe someone can shed some light on this subject. As I was going to work this morning I noticed a couple of campaign signs at the corner of my property. At this moment I have no idea whom they are for, I don't care either. Is it legal to place them on my property without my consent? They are within 6ft to the road though...
