Re: employee badge door locks

where i work they have those HID things, wave the badge and the door opens.

seems they use it for security and as a method for if the building has to be evac'd they can tell who is inside and who has left as even when exiting for a fire alarm people are suppost to badge at some door as they exit.

OP..you should really contact a local access control company to give you estimates and options for your specific needs. Yes, you can always try to do it yourself to save some money but in the long run it can turn out more expensive. Keep in mind that most cities/counties have codes and regulations on access control doors. Also, a company should/can provide warranty and preventive maintenance on the system.

BTW...yes, a solid access control/CCTV system can be expensive.

we have these things at work on doors and when we clock in:
We have the same readers. I keep my badge in my back pocket. I just have to point my butt at the reader and I'm in!

Schlage has a system that will do that, plus records a pic of the user so you can see later if the person's face matches the ID card.

We have the same, I'm in charge of the entire system.

As someone who has used various card-based access systems for over 20 years now, I can tell you that these generally provide a good level of security for after-hours access, but little or no real security during normal business hours, depending on your level of inbound/outbound foot traffic.

Just something to consider before you sink a lot of money into this.

The school system I work for uses Securakey (»www.securakey.com/) for access control. We've been able to give our faculty, and staff a fob with relatively low costs compared to other available solutions, though I'm not sure of any exact numbers.

They are good during off hours, but anyone can walk in behind an employee during normal business hours. We use Honeywell, I get to grant access since I'm in HR. I can see entry exit and video of the corridors where the doors are. We record 24/7/365 in black and white.

One of my clients uses DSX Access, works pretty good. You either slide the card through the card reader or insert it. Generally you are sliding for access from outside, and inserting for inside doors. Everything is logged by computer, so you know who is coming in and out. You can also restrict access to certain area's.

We are using kantech »www.kantech.com/ the read response and strike activation time is extremely quick 1 second or less, intergrates well with camera systems, alarms and can do multi layer authentication (like a hi security area (read key then enter a pin#).
