1 edit | [Fiber] WinXP gets much slower download speed than Ubuntu
At my university I get a fast Internet connection. I can download at up to 90mbps (Speakeasy.net speedtest) on both my Ubuntu setup and my Mac OSX setup. Windows Vista also seems to be able to get up to 90mbps. When I run Windows XP (on the same machine as Ubuntu) however, I get a maximum download speed of 30mbps. What is causing this difference in download speed? |

| Operating systems straight out of the box/ Linux will usually be faster than XP. Vista will always be faster than XP . Vista is modern , XP is an old OS. Your XP needs tuning. Try downloading TCPOptimiser and play with it. I use W2k which is older than XP( XP is W2k with a few bells and whistles) and can get the same speed as Vista or Linux. Basically any Windows prior to Vista wasn't optimised for the internet. |

| reply to svirchow1 Unless you are confident enough to hack the registry then you will have to download one of the free software progs. I live in the UK and the most popular I would guess is TCPOtimiser. To use it you simply set the MAX speed that your line will allow, in your case it would appear to be 6k. Then select Optimise. OK that and reboot. The above is just for basic settings. There is a lot more can be done to gain more speed, but as the Irish guy always says, you need to put up your line specs. i.e. My line is supposed to be able to handle a max download of 11000kbps, but because I use a certain router/modem and a piece of software I get 13500kbps. |

| reply to m i k e Great. I was skeptical about this software (I thought it might have been malware. Sorry for thinking that.)
Anyway, I get this window, but what do I change? I don't see an optimise button. Do you mean the optimal radio button? Do I need to change TCP Receive Window? If So, How do I know what to set that to? |

| reply to m i k e Move the speed indicator to your Max speed. Select Modify all network adapters. Select optimal settings. The MTU will be set once you have done these . It will than ask to reboot. Do so. When you are happy with these settings click on preferences. This contains the Latency setting/adjustment. Mine is set ( from memory)to 200. Try the various figures, I found 200 was the best for my set up. Also, after reboot you will have a Backup file showing on your Desktop. |

| reply to m i k e Linux is usually much faster than XP on the same internet connection, With Linux hack dynamically kernel settings of using sysctl command that gives you useful to do hack of tweaking a kernel settings dynamically, that i have done with that before and it worked very well for me. -- Professional Linux environmental blows microsoft windows out of the water. |
