 | [WIN7] Win 7 hangs on restart I've been working on this problem for hours today and I'm about ready to give up. This is a very smart group posting on this site and I thought maybe someone has a solution.
I've been trying to do a clean boot by disabling different things, but haven't found the culprit as yet. Reboot is fine in safe mode. Does anyone know what the culprit service or start up service can be? I've only been able to do a hard shut down and then restart the computer. Starts up fine, just re-start and shutdown is a problem.. I have a Dell XPS 400 with 4 gigs of ram. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... -- Sprint DSL |

 | reply to Keizer It just gets stuck. I have to push the power button to turn it off. Turn the power back on and it will start up just fine.. -- Sprint DSL |

Here's what I think is the problem, not sure..
Hope someone out there knows something to help... -- Sprint DSL |

 | reply to Keizer My problem is not booting, but is re-booting after installing software or windows updates. Just plain will not re-start without doing a hard shutdown using the power button. Starts right up when I turn the power on. -- Sprint DSL |

| reply to granny60 The errors you have posted seem to indicate incompatibilities with windows 7 with Intel Quick Resume (IntelQRTD) and an HP application (hptskmgr.exe).
What drivers did you install for Intel Quick Resume?
Also, what HP applications are installed?
|
|
 | The Intel Quick Resume Drivers are for a version of XP Media or something like that. I have disabled that in the bios now.
Question, can I do a repair of Win 7 without hosing my system and losing all my programs.? If this is done would that possibly fix my shutdown or restart problem. I've gone through all the steps of the clean boot. I think I must have manually turned this computer off and back on about 100 times trying to find what the heck is going on. I've disabled all the hp items and have even removed one of my printers.. I'm beginning to think there is a missing dll or driver or something has been corrupted. The installation went fine. Can't figure out what happened..
I have the Win 7 Home Premium upgrade installed over the Vista Home Premium.. -- Sprint DSL |

| A repair of Windows should not affect adversely affect your system or programs. However I would suggest to back up any critical files beforehand as a precaution.
A repair may or may not fix your problem.
There are some third party drivers that load outside of what is included in a "clean boot".
Do you recall when the problem started and did it coincide with any software or hardware change?
Also, you could consider running the System File Checker to check for corrupt .dlls:

 | I have already done all the things you suggested. Only thing left is to do a clean install which would mean formatting and re-installing Vista and then upgrade to Win7.
I did find a suggested fix doing a search for this problem, but the fix involved a registry key not present in my system. It was Hkey current users, control, desktop..I think that was the order....but the key which I needed to change the value of on the right hand side was not there. Apparently there's a shutdown value somewhere...
I'm hoping since other folks are having this problem that Microsoft will come up with a fix. In the mean time, I'm open to any suggestions... -- Sprint DSL |

 | Just one other questions regarding Win7 not shutting or restarting....
Has anyone contacted Microsoft tech support about this?
Maybe that should be my next move since they offer limited time free support... -- Sprint DSL |

UPDATE
I'm having problems with Windows 7 shutting down. I'm using a Belkin Model #F6C650 USB.
I've been troubleshooting for about 4 days and also 2 hours today on the phone with Microsoft. They have moved me to the advanced tech support and I'll get a call back tomorrow.
Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with shutdown and is using a Belkin battery backup -- -- Sprint DSL |

Re: [WIN7] Win 7 hangs on restart UPDATE!!! FIXED!! Just wanted everyone who offered help on this problem. While waiting for another call from advanced tech support from Microsoft this morning, I decided to try one more thing. I have a Belkin battery backup/surge surpressor. I unplugged all components from it and plugged everything into just a surge protector power strip...started the computer up again and after everything had loaded, I tried the restart function again.....VOILA!!!! worked perfectly. Just to be sure I had found the problem, I shutdown and plugged everything back into the Belkin battery . Started back up, again got everything loaded and tried the shutdown, restart again. Windows would not shut down without my having to do a hard shutdown. Repeated everything again......I'M a happy camper now. Everything is fixed and all is well. The problem was my battery backup... -- Sprint DSL |
