 | What's the best cable/DSL in Portland, Oregon? Can anyone recommend a good Internet Connection provider in Portland, Oregon? I hear that AT&T Broadband is giving a lot of users problems. So I was wondering if anyone knows of which DSL, etc, companies provide the fastest speeds and the best service? |

| Hi paradisecowgirl. I just found out through an inside source that our cable co. is going to offer broadband here before summer. Have you noticed all the cable trucks in the neighborhoods lately? -- AreYou Doing It? |

Yes, indeedy. They were in our neighborhood for several days the week before last and there are all kinds of new cable boxes.
Have you also noticed all the cable outages there have been lately too? Like today!? "Scheduled maintenance" from 11a - 6p on a Saturday! :P What I want to know is if when my TV cable is out like this would my Internet cable be out too? At this rate, I'm gonna stick with Verizon!!
What do you think?

 | reply to blackdragon4 I've had cable internet since Jan 2001 (@Home until Dec 2001, then it switched to AT&T's own network ATTBI). Current cost is $48/mo, with modem rental. Subtract $10/mo if you buy your own modem ($100-$150). Speed is "up to" 1.5 Mbps down, 128 kbps up, and I usually get 90% or better of those rates.
I can't get DSL, so cable was the only alternative to dial-up. A friend has Verizon DSL, gets 640/640 speeds (I think), and pays around $60 for DSL & ISP (Earthlink).
Cable service has worked fine for me. There are a lot of complaints around the country about poor connection speeds and customer service. But I've heard that Portland has one of the better systems, and has not had many problems. I've only noticed 1 outage of a few hours since I started. Read and/or post in the ATTBI forum for more info and "opinions" about cable. |

| reply to darcilicious Well I bet they will have a special going to get some customer base out here so I think I'll try them. Like badkarma, I've heard our broadband through AT&T is pretty good. -- AreYou Doing It? |

 | reply to blackdragon4 When I signed up, there was a new customer special, $20/mo for first 6 months, including modem rental, with free installation. Can't beat that deal, as cheap as dial-up. Watch for similar deals for new customers. If you don't like it the service, dump it after the intro period, there's no contract or penalty to quit. |

| reply to blackdragon4 Depending on the deal, I may or may not try it; I don't like the price of the package I have but I definitely like the speeds I get on 1500/384. Unless ATTBI comes up with that speed (or higher) at a lower price, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle of getting another modem etc set up here Of course, I might just put the husband to be on it so I can have the DSL connection all to myself, bwahahahaha
Meeow, keep us posted if you decide to go for it! (And of course, I'll do the same)

 | reply to blackdragon4 I asked DSL-Only and Verizon to check if I qualify for DSL and they said "No." - since I'm 4000 feet over their maximum distance. My phoneline is from Verizon. Should and can I get other DSL Providers as well? Aside from the good deal/promo ($10/month for 6 months) that AT&T Broadband has right now, is cable better than DSL? From what I hear and read, DSL is better and more secure, right? |
|
 | reply to blackdragon4 Well I will say that DSL-ONLY is NOT the service to go with in Portland.
I used them for two years almost and the connectivity was okay but their response to security related issues STINKS like sh*t.
There were two occurrences (one with the QAZ Internet worm) and one with Nimda and Code Red..that I was appalled that they did nothing about.
I am a security nut and run a fairly expensive and complex firewall called a SonicWall SOHO 2, and my logs on both occasions (time periods of two weeks plus..on each occasion) were going crazy with hits from INSIDE THE DSL-ONLY network. Yes it's true...their own customers were infected and trying to infect me..and they would do absolutely NOTHING about it.
Steer clear of this one..if anyone wants my firewall logs as proof...(excluding the DSL-ONLY employee (I KNOW WHO YOU ARE) that poses as a consumer on this site and defends the company and belittles the persons who post) just ask for them.
Thanks! |

Yes well, Verizon's solution was to block all incoming traffic on port 80. And guess what, they're still blocking it!! (This applies to the ex-BellAtlantic areas of Verizon and not to the ex-GTE areas).
...be care what you wish for...
