sailor posted : That was the best article I've seen to date on the subject.

I especially like GM's plan. Not only for the power but the sculpted front seats. One thing I've seen on many used P71 Crown Vics is the excessive seat wear and eventual tears in the seat where the gun/holster constantly rubbed against the seat. Those sculpted seats will eliminate that as well as add to the comfort as mentioned.
__

The Caprice PPV will be powered by a 6.0L V-8 engine with Active Fuel Management technology and E85 capability. GM says it will do the 0-to-60 sprint in less than six seconds, and Goebel said it will have a top speed “in the 150-mph range. We’re not sure exactly what the horsepower will be yet, but it will be in the neighborhood of 355.”

One notable feature in the future Caprice PPV will be front seats that are “sculpted” to conform to the shape of the various items that police officers carry in their equipment belts. “So, it’s a more comfortable seat for officers, many of whom spend long hours behind the wheel,” said Goebel.

A 2004 and a 2005. What awesome cars they are. There's a reason they are the number 1 car of choice among law enforcement agencies across America.

Just got a new 2010 Ford Fleet brochure today.

The only reason I would hesitate to buy an ex-Police car is that I got to see the abuse they go through, and people think rental cars are bad.

As to car of choice, who really makes a RWD 4 door car with a large enough interior anymore? I do see that there are a lot of other cars being used for non-cruiser duties (Santa Ana for example has Malibus and Honda Accord Hybrids for detectives and commanders) but for a cruiser, I think they are the best, although the Charger screaming up in your rearview lights blazing can bit a bit imtimidating.

The flip side of the cars taking abuse is that they are probably one of the best maintained cars on the roads. Serviced on a regular basis etc. But I do understand what you meant but if you wanted a Crown Vic Police Interceptor you don't have to buy one that was used as a daily patrol car driven by many different officers and run to hell.

When I started looking for a P71 ( police interceptor to keep it short ) I didn't want one that came from a local police department that was used day in day out as a patrol car...I wanted one that was low mileage and preferable used by a Federal agency or one that was purchased new and assigned to a detective that was a take home car and not used for pulling people over or for high speed pursuit. I always wanted a Crown Victoria but also wanted one that was a P71 because they are manufactured with so many heavy-duty components compared to the Crown Victoria manufactured for civilian use. (P71's have not been available new to the public but the public can purchase a used one.)

I spent months looking for a low mileage one and they are out there but you have to look and look and look. I came oh so close in buying a 2008 that was never put into police service and was a fleet dealership demo. It had the optional fire suppression system and under 5k miles on her but the guy wouldn't budge off of his asking price and so I kept looking elsewhere.

I finally found a 2005 Black P71 with only 48k miles in mint condition. It was a one agent federal law enforcement P71 and it also had the optional street appearance package including full front cloth seats and armrests along with full interior carpeting....Chrome grill and door handles and full wheel covers instead of the dog dish wheel covers. An awesome car that was in Chicago and I purchased it and made a deal on the purchase price to have it shipped to me here in NY and the car is beyond my expectations.

You can see by the photos I took of her the condition she is in and no abuse here....all this for approx $10k including shipping.

The next day or so after buying that one I saw a blue 2004 with higher mileage ( 95k ) but was in amazing condition for sale in central PA. This was ordered by the NC highway patrol and was never used as a daily patrol car...It also was ordered with the optional 'Street Appearance' package . It was then sold to a private collector who removed all the street appearance items and turned it into the 'stealth' look. He had tons of pictures and he also had a binder inches thick from the N.C. Highway Patrol with each and every service record of the vehicle from the moment they took delivery of the car. The slightest little thing the car needed and bam, it was installed.

So I bought that blue 04 as well and made a deal with the collector to deliver it to my home and he did. While I have had the black 05 on the road for about a month now I just put the blue 04 on the road yesterday ( see photos )

Both of these vehicles are beyond my expectations...they will run and run and run with the proven 4.6 engine and they as you mentioned rear-wheel drive, tons of interior and trunk space, very comfortable and have all heavy duty components not found in a regular civilian Crown Vic and yet they get decent to good gas mileage and to me they are very sharp looking vehicles.

So all in all, no need to hesitant on buying a used Crown Vic P71. Just spend the time searching for one that wasn't used as a daily squad car...They're out there and eBay I would say is the best place to look on a regular basis.

These cars are awesome. No rust anywhere, original paint and these engines will run 250k miles and even more. That is why many taxi's are always on the lookout for used Crown Vics. They know they have been maintained on a regular basis and will run and run and run.

I've owned dozen of vehicles over the years and I will say driving one of these P71's across the country with the cruise control on ( they both have it ) would be such a pleasant and comfortable experience. And that to me is more important at this time than any 0-60 time. And with so much interior room and a trunk so huge you could move your belongings across the country without the need for a U-Haul :)

PrntRhd posted : The reputation of British cars was primarily laid at the door of unreliable Lucas electrical systems that would leave you stranded at night in the rain. And can you say "positive ground ignition"?
:o
Of course Lucas blames evil outsourcers who had bad quality control and put Lucas' name on the components. In any case Lucas is now known as "the prince of darkness". When Ford bought Jaguar they got rid of all Lucas components for quality reasons.

British spotty build quality of course also did not help.

TearAbite posted : remember, just because a company (Jaguar) is owned by Ford, or some lame Indian company, it does not "make" it a ford.. Take a ride in an XF or an XK and you'll know what i mean.. if after taking a ride in one of these you still think "it's a Ford", i'd call you a liar to your face.

aside from my previous perceptions, i dont really care what nameplate is on a car.. If i was car-shopping today and a Ford had the build, fit & finish as the Japanese or German (or, "Indian") cars, and the price was right, i would by it - but, based on my past experience (up thru last year), the Ford products were nowhere close to the competition.
--

Don't hate OS X users because of YOUR poor choice in operating systems.

TearAbite posted : no offense taken.. But now i'll probably go check out a new Ford just to see how it compares - although like i already posted previously, my friend's '08 Mustang GT was trash on the interior, just like the '95 Tbird, and '85 GT.. So i'm not confident that much has changed from 2008 to 2009..
