I was wondering if anyone in the rustburg or Evington area was having a problem with their internet speed declining in the evening hours. Specifically around 8pm and later. I have noticed and it used to only be on mondays for some odd reason. That my download speed would drop from 8.-9.mb to around .5-1. mb. My upload speed never changes though it stays at the steady .7 sometimes .65. Its rather annoying that the speeds drop like that. Now its doing it every single night. Not just mondays. Anyone else having the same issue?
reply to Evington8 It's not just your area. I'm in Christiansburg and having the same issues. Been happening for a while but it's consistant now, early evenings are the worst. Supposed to be a 5MB connection but lately it's no better than 2 if I'm really lucky. Their solution: send a tech out on Friday. I'd go to Verizon but they only offer 1.5M at my house for the same $.
reply to Evington8 I'm in Christiansburg and my speeds are always solid. Granted they should be offering faster top speeds but it is what it is and at least I'm getting what I pay for. Cox in Roanoke offers 20Mb and I think Comcast in Blacksburg has 16.
We'll probably see 20Mb speeds right around the time that surrounding area providers are offering human teleportation services.
Must be nice. Can I come over? I don't know what these folks are doing, but it seems to be worse at night, as the OP suggested. They came out Friday afternoon and it was fine when they came by. Of course later..
Its rather annoying now. You can call them to schedule something they send out a tech.. who not only shows up late but of course doesn't find anything wrong. I have replaced the modem and everything. Nothing is working. During the day the speed is fine and runs wonderfully. In the evening is when it declines. Sometimes I am lucky to even be online and able to do anything. I have called numerous times and nothing has been done and no credits have been issued. If there was another service out here where i lived i wouldn't hesitate to switch. I would rather have a consistent 1.5mb than a rather crappy 8mb.
What are your speeds to New York? The servers you used are always slower than what I see from New York.
Yes, I am a Jet customer and am very happy with speeds I get to New York. I have found a severe variance using speedtest.net suggested servers, but being in the field, I have found that you must choose servers outside of the provider network that have the best performance.
For example:
versus:
Using my suggested server:
I know from experience that with my work internet connection that New York is the best server to test against. My work connection is through Jet and we always have speeds at or above what we pay for but never below.
What must be taken into consideration is the server load and bandwidth into the selected server. Sometimes the low bandwidth experienced is not your provider, but the server selected.
reply to Evington8 We're paying for 8Mbps and 768Kbps. We usually get about half and it fluctuates constantly.
This was with no one but me using our connection. There are 5 computers connected to this and 4 of us who heavily use it. Even with different servers giving different results, I never get a download of more than 50Kbps or an online game with ping less than 800. We have called Jet and they reset our connection and it will work for about an hour or two and then reverts to this every time. I just wish there was a better alternative to Jet.
