Thunder Bay, ON | How Is Shaw Phone Now? What is Involved with Installation?
They are down to $12 bucks a month +4 cents/min for long distance. Looks very appealing. But is it a hassle to switch over? How is it set up?

| It should be pretty painless,
they install a phone terminal and cut over the old POTS line from the house wiring.
they can port your number over takes 14 days, make sure your not under contract and don't cancel your current provider they will cancel it on the day they switch you over.
all your current phones and jacks will work the same. |

Usually they cancel it on the day it's switched. Give it a few days after the switch, call in and speak with the provisioning department to make sure it's all good and have them check on cancellation status of your old provider. With some providers, they absolutely -refuse- to let any 3rd party provider conduct the cancel, which can lead to some very nasty extra billing for services not rendered. |

| I've found the Shaw Phone service to be indistinguishable from the normal Telus service, with one exception: At my home, the service fails when there is a power failure.
Shaw claims that their service will run for up to four hours during a power failure, and the device they install in the home has a battery for this, but their upstream equipment doesn't always have backup power. I've called to discuss the problem several times (the power here fails a few times each year), and it always ends with a tech guy telling me how the repeaters in their cable lines will lose power, etc.
So, as long as your power is reliable, everything should be fine.  |

Just had mine installed the other day and it was pretty painless, even with house alarm integration. The price is what got me to switch since we mainly only use it for the alarm system. Our cell phones have pretty sweet plans and so we use them for long distance. The install is way easier then it was a few years back. I had a few bud's that were installers and they were telling me about nightmares and its effect on Internet as well. Honestly, I say go for it. If you don't like it, switch back...but I don't think you can take your ported number away from Shaw...at least that's how it was.
As for the ANON poster from UVic, I'm hoping that the house phone isn't a cordless phone...because, well without power those won't work either!

I've done a few installs with Shaw Digital Phone. I wasn't particularly impressed with any of the installations. The techs they send do a pretty decent job but you could cut the miscoordination with a knife. The most recent install took FIVE!!!! technicians on three different days - two to drop off the modem and attach it to the wall, two to connect the modem to the coax, and one to connect the modem to the phone line. After installation, things have gone relatively smoothly.
As far as audio quality goes, I hooked up some test equipment from the office and discovered that it is significantly better when you talk to someone with a landline. When you talk to someone with a cell phone it's not quite as good because for some reason the audio gain is higher with Shaw (read: it's slightly louder) which distorts cell audio and can cause echo. It is not significantly worse though and well worth the better price.

If u live in a Condo with an intercom, there usually will be issues and will require repeated visits by the tech.
Caller ID doesn't work well. Often numbers are displayed with no name, just "out of area" listed. This is especially noticable with cell phones and even with other Shaw Home Phone lines. |
