| reply to Snakeoil Re: updated to 9.10
After using it awhile, I think that I'm gonna wait till I get the Ubuntu 9.10 CD-Rom & do a clean install. Something must have happened when i updated, cause it's real SLOW doing most everything. When it takes 15 seconds to load Firefox when before it only took less than a second, somethings messed up! Probably when I manually added KDE via Synaptic.
I would burn an ISO image, if my dvd +/- RW drive hadn't died on me. Figures, had this Dell for 5 years, used the DVD-Rom drive all the time, and the recordable drive 1 or 2 times, and THAT'S the one that croaks. -- I'm Forever Folding For Team Helix Autism Speaks, Please Listen! |

2 edits | reply to Yippz Voip Bollocks... I downloaded Ubuntu via the BT link they provide... burned it on my iMac which verified the data afterwards..
I put it in my m17 and booted it up... install seemed be going normal. I selected the language, told it I wanted install and then the screen just goes black. There's some HDD and CD activity for a few minutes and then it just stops.
I also tried installing it in Windows via Wubi and it installed out but when I booted into Linux I came across the same issue.. I verify disk integrity and it checked out okay.
I'm currently downloading Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop i386 image from a mirror I got from Ubuntu's site.. I'm hoping there was just something wrong with my disk.
I also noted that I had burned the disk at 24x instead of a slower speed. Other than trying to download it from a different source and burning it at a slower speed, does anyone have any ideas on what I could do? -- Follow me on twitter!

| reply to Snakeoil optical drives can be notoriously awesome at being flakey. Trying lower burn speeds an diffferent media is always a good idea.
Another tip, select Check CD For Defects from the bootup menu BEFORE installing. The only machine that can tell you whether or not it can read the whole CD is the machine that'll be reading the whole CD -- Ubuntu MOTU Developer and Forums Council |

I did check CD for defects after it didn't work.. odd thing was it said all was good. Regardless I'm hoping that a slower burn and getting my ISO from a different source will help out. -- Follow me on twitter!

| Will do! I know after sitting for 30+ minutes I tried to eject the disk but it wouldn't come out. I hit the power button and a screen appeared that said something along the lines of "Power Button Pressed! Please eject disk and hit enter..." After that the CD will eject and then the computer restarts. I'm about to burn the other copy but I may not get a chance to install it tonight. I'll report back when I do however. -- Follow me on twitter!

| Yeah when booted up off a LiveCD there's no way that Ubuntu will let you eject the CD using the eject button on the drive; that's expected behavior.
What's scary behavior is the hanging you're seeing, and it'd be important to know if it's due to read errors (which dmesg will scream about) or some weirder operating system bug. -- Ubuntu MOTU Developer and Forums Council |

| Well, first I tried running the LiveCD and it hung. Then I tried installing it and it hung. Then I tried installing it via Wubi and it hung after the installation and initial boot..
All forms of the installation exhibited the same issue. From what I could see at least... The new image is burned and verified on my iMac. I'm going to put it in the m17, verify disk integrity and then try to install it.
Now, I had originally burned a copy that I downloaded from Bittorrent (link provided by Ubuntu) and the copy I just got from a mirror (link also provided by Ubuntu), so could there be a difference between the two? Maybe the BT ISO is corrupt somehow? I find it unlikely but still something to consider. This disk was also burned at 8x instead of 24x.
Checking integrity right now... -- Follow me on twitter!

Usually iso files downloaded via bittorrent are more robust as far as corruption is concerned because bittorrent performs integrity checking during the transfer. -- Verizon FiOS subscriber since 2005 | Mac owner since 1990 | Fedora user since 2006 | CentOS user since 2007 | "Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing." - graysonf | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit. |

The only machine that can tell you whether or not it can read the whole CD is the machine that'll be reading the whole CD I never dare burn bootable media such as a Linux CD above 4x, even though I got a nice Pioneer DVD-RW. I do most other things at half speed. I'd rather not waste media. I can wait a few minutes for my fresh cd. |

| reply to timcuth said by timcuth :The 9.10 upgrade killed my PC. Everything worked fine all the way through the upgrade process. Then, I restarted the PC when instructed. It booted up to the point of a text "login:" message on a screen that was flickering very badly. It would not accept all of my keystrokes, so it was impossible to enter the correct password. I powered the PC down for a minute, then restarted again. It did the same thing. Tim I got it fixed. I booted in recovery mode, which came up to a text login, but the display was stable and I could log in.
Then, I edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf and changed Driver="nvidia" to Driver="nv". This allowed me to boot up in GUI mode, but still without a proper driver - kind of like Windows in VGA mode. Finally, I downloaded driver 190.42 from the nVidia web site, installed it as usual, and now the display is working, correctly.
Next problem to tackle - no audio.

Which desktop environment are you using? I already tackled the no sound problem on a couple KDE machines. Seems XFCE does not have that issue. Not sure about GNOME, as KDE and XFCE are my desktops of choice, depending on the machine. |

Dell Mini10V netbook, and HP Pavilion 9100 -Jason I only have seen the no sound issue in KDE. It is relatively trivial to fix. Mainly just making sure pulseaudio does not try to dominate as the sound server, as most KDE apps are not setup to use it and the default sound is much better for the KDE environment. |

1 edit | reply to jdong Okay, so with the new ISO and slower burn speed (8x is the slowest Disk Utility will allow in OS X BTW...) the same issue is occurring. I've taken pictures of it this time so you can see exactly what's happening...
Here what comes up first after I tell Ubuntu I want to install it...

Then I get this screen...

Then it goes black after a few seconds.. I've let it sit for almost an hour and there's no hard drive or CD drive activity whatsoever... When I press the power button on my laptop, I get this screen...

After that I eject the disk and hit enter and I'm stuck with a laptop running only Windows 7 and my iMac...
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
EDIT.. photobucket is acting stupid but if you click on any of the thumbnails you'll be able to see all of the pictures.. it was either this or have the full size image posted here which would have been annoying.. My apologies -- Follow me on twitter!

| You need to boot it in recovery mode to see whether the video drivers are the problem. Look for this option when you get to the livecd initial menu. *One* possibility is that the video drivers aren't working judging from where it hung but this can be hard to tell definitively. If it doesn't hang in recovery mode then the video drivers are very likely the culprit. | I'll give that a try when I get home! I also had a hunch it was my video card as that was causing issues in 9.04... I have 2 Radeon HD3870's in Crossfire... I'm sure now I could get it working once inside Ubuntu (with Snakeoil and DSLR's help.. ) but if its hanging on installation.. Damn.
If I can get it into recovery mode could I install Ubuntu from there? Thank you! -- Follow me on twitter!

| reply to Snakeoil I was going to wait a few days at least, but I used the extra hour today to upgrade to 9.10 and it went very smoothly. It took longer to install than it did to download, but all told it was about 2.2 hours. I actually have better sound, and no real issues at all, so I'm pretty impressed so far. Even my old Logitech Quickcam is working. I did have to do some digging to recover grip, and for some reason I can't seem to restore freecell no matter what I try, but those aren't major issues. I have not noticed any faster boot times yet.
Kudos to all the Ubuntu team for their efforts. |
