anon posted : I was going to wait a few days at least, but I used the extra hour today to upgrade to 9.10 and it went very smoothly. It took longer to install than it did to download, but all told it was about 2.2 hours. I actually have better sound, and no real issues at all, so I'm pretty impressed so far. Even my old Logitech Quickcam is working. I did have to do some digging to recover grip, and for some reason I can't seem to restore freecell no matter what I try, but those aren't major issues. I have not noticed any faster boot times yet.

Kudos to all the Ubuntu team for their efforts.

kleeman posted : You need to boot it in recovery mode to see whether the video drivers are the problem. Look for this option when you get to the livecd initial menu. *One* possibility is that the video drivers aren't working judging from where it hung but this can be hard to tell definitively. If it doesn't hang in recovery mode then the video drivers are very likely the culprit. X is a very common component to crash on someone from upgrades or misconfiguration. However, it only handles the display. It is not the heart of your system. It can usually be repaired from Linux itself from recovery mode.

Anyways, I solved my very last quirk and can now call my main install perfect. epsxe is now running like a champ. For those interested, there were 2 hitches. Karmic doesn't like the upx packed archive for some reason and gave me one of the most frustrating errors I've seen in Linux, just saying killed in terminal after launch with no info. The other is the fact Karmic uses libgtk-2.0, which does produce a verbose error once the first dumb error is solved(took me awhile because "killed" does not give me much to go on).

Solution:
Download libglib1.2 »packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libglib1.2ldbl and libgtk1.2 »packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libgtk1.2 for Jaunty. Stuff them aside in a new directory for now.

Run this in a terminal.
sudo apt-get install upx-ucl
cd /path/to/epsxe-executable
upx -d epsxe

This will unpack the upx executable and stop the annoying "killed" error. You will probably now see verbose errors about libgtk, etc. The first part is thanks to the awesome forums Ubuntu has. Now to the second part(or the rest of it). We are now going to provide libgtk1.2 libraries without making them the system default. So, we're not really installing them perse.

Run in terminal:
cd /path/to/downloaded/debs
dpkg -x libglib1.2ldbl_1.2.10-19build1_i386.deb .
dpkg -x libgtk1.2_1.2.10-18.1build2_i386.deb .
cd usr/lib
sudo cp * /usr/lib

Now epsxe should run flawlessly. Figured I would show this due to it being related to lib upgrades in Karmic and knowing some people love their emulation. pcsx-df runs flawless with no modification, but epsxe has always been better =)

Selenia posted : I finally solved the crappy performance with the open source ati driver with KDE on 9.10 for which updates just kept causing further regression. This was noticable with composite effects enabled. Create the AccelMethod Option under the Device section in xorg.conf and set it to XAA. It seems this version of KDE plays havoc with EXA acceleration(the default) due to it not be able to accelerate many bits in this version of KDE, from what I've read. This may work for you if you've been pleased with the video of full screen games, etc but KDE seemed atrociously slow. Now Karmic finally feels faster than Jaunty on the ATI/KDE machines. Hope this helps others.

Selenia posted : Yeah, the crossfire is not Linux friendly at this time. They are working on it. ATI support is generally fine. I am using the notoriously difficult x1950PRO(according to ATI) and the open source radeon or ati package works great 99% of the time. I'd show you a glxinfo, but posting from my phone atm. Only issue I've had is with newer Adobe flash(Adobe's fault, see my link last post) and the fact ffxi still needs some fine tuning lol. Anyways, the performance is better than the old fglrx. The new fglrx is improved but only suppots the same cards as Radeonhd open source driver. Between the drivers, ati is pretty well covered. Some drivers do need tweaks, but c'mon. You're Linux users =)
