 | reply to amark I have been using both Avast 5 and AVG 9 the last couple weeks. At this point I can't pick a winner. At times AVG seems lighter, at least in terms of memory usage. I am really anxious to test Avast 5 once the behavior blocker is working. I suspect it will provide better protection than AVG once it is final, though possibly at the cost of some ram usage. |

Amark should test what's already out in stable forms, and see what plays well with his/her computer right now, because the AV is needed right now. When Avast 5 comes out in stable form, it can be tested then, if so inclined.
It all really comes down to gut response in the end, though, as far as I'm concerned. I've tested AV's that other people have raved about, but if it triggers annoyances or problems with my computer set-up, then all the praise in world, or the highest testing scores in the world aren't going to make me keep that AV on my computer. If I find the interface awkward or non-intuitive to me, then that's a mark against it. If it turns out to be a resource hog, or slows down my computer, ditto.
One particular AV program doesn't have to be the make-or-break security program, which was what I meant about the high test score remarks. We all would like to use an AV that's the highest-rated, but with a layered security approach, there is redundancies that can make up for any one program's less than stellar performance in a certain area.
I've always found that while recommendations are helpful, it always comes down to testing the program on my actual computer. For example, I would love to use Threatfire instead of paying for Mamutu, but I always have problems every time I try out TF, and Mamutu works flawlessly for me.
Just remember to do a Restore point before installing any AV, amark. -- Patriotism is not waving a flag, it is living the ideals

DownTheShoreTag, you're itPremium join:2003-12-02 Beautiful NJ kudos:11 | reply to amark Can't advise you on the time frames, because I'm using NIS on my laptop, and NAV on my desktop.
It really depends on how loaded your HD is. I've always found full scans to take a long time, no matter which AV I've used in the past. I'm talking over an hour and a half. Others have posted much shorter times in other threads, but I haven't experienced it.
Norton Internet Security (NIS) does full scans (504.000+ items) weekly for me during idle computer times, so it takes longer to accomplish (the last one took 3 hours, but again, it was only doing that while the computer was idle and since I don't leave the computer on and running when I'm not going to be using it, that means it was scanning during my pauses of use). It also does multiple Idle Quick Scans of about 8000 particular files daily. -- Patriotism is not waving a flag, it is living the ideals
