| SpeedStream 5200 - Frontiernet locked - unlock for Qwest?
Hello, I have a Speedstream 5200 060-E242-A28 modem/router given to me. Used to work when I had NorthStar Access DSL, but is currently locked to PPPoA settings/firmware for Frontiernet. These settings apparently worked with Northstar, but aren't compatible with Qwest in my area using MSN ISP (requires PPPoE).
I'd like to re-flash with the appropriate firmware so I can configure this router to work using PPPoE.
I've found a lot of information in the Bell Canada forums, but still haven't found information relevant to US/Qwest.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you, Jeremy |

If your model is the one indicated you should be able to load the firmware which will activate PPPoE.
Might be a good idea to read the entire thread before actually doing an upgrade... Good Luck |

| reply to graphicsdewd Thank you GlowingBlue, I did come across that post but had some apprehension as it's a Bell forum, this modem is surely locked to Frontier and because everyone keeps referencing the E242 FW but then reverts back to talking about or posting updates for E240. I have the solid black case and this post specifically says not to upgrade that version. I will take this FW into consideration if I can't come up with any more alternatives and if I end up with a bricked modem, guess I can pick up an actual Qwest modem off craigslist!
Here's today's update: Qwest tech came out and repaired broken wire 2 blocks away and I now have a DSL signal. Plugged my SS in and now get a DSL light.
I have configured what little I could in this modem due to the FW limitations. It is set for no DHCP. My computer is a Mac Tiger 10.4. I configured that to use PPPoE, entered my Qwest login and password. On the TCP/IP tab, I have Configure IPv4 set to Using PPP. For some reason, it automatically assigns the IP 10.64.64.64 and the router as 10.112.112.112. Googling this has turned up little to no help.
I checked the log on the SS and get this: System Current Mode: Bridge-Router DSL DataPump Version 01.01.00.00 DSL State: Waiting Ethernet Link 1 Up - 100Base-TX Full Duplex DSL State: Initializing DSL Hybrid 3 DSL Link Up 1 US 896 DS 7168 (INTL:G.DMT) Ethernet Link 1 Down Ethernet Link 1 Up 1 100Base-TX Full Duplex PPPoE oe:rx PADI err: no server (this last line continuously repeats)
I'm guessing the modem is properly in bridge mode and that the communication error is happening between Qwest and the Mac. I'm leaning towards the Mac not being properly configured for PPPoE. The odd 10.64.64.64 IP address is what's confusing me.
One suggestion I received I will try and update tomorrow. I do have an extra Motorola router which I can configure to use PPPoE. Then, I'll keep the modem in bridge and disable PPPoE on the Mac and assign it an IP from the Motorola.
Any more help on this would be appreciated. Thanks! |

| reply to graphicsdewd Update : Possibly Fixed
I tried re-wording and found another page: »Unlocking your Speedstream 5200 E242
This has an extensive list of the direct page names of configuration pages on the modem that are inaccessible through my web view (since Frontier excluded them from the visual page).
Turns out, the modem is unlocked and by directly typing in the address of the page I'm looking for, I am able to make the changes to the modem. The bridge config page allows me to turn routing off and just use pure bridging. The error the modem was getting before indicated it wasn't in full bridge mode. Also, the vc config gets me to the page so I can create a new PPPoE config for Qwest.
Upon finding this, I'll test it out and post whether or not it works. Maybe in case anyone else ever stumbles across this problem, this post will be of some help! |

| reply to graphicsdewd Qwest is now working. In my area, apparently the DSLAM will support PPPoA also, but I successfully set the connection up as PPPoE 0/32 LLC, and in Client Mode only. Note: The built-in firewall in this particular modem was blocking my outgoing traffic. I disabled it for this connection and ran NAPT (otherwise known as NAT). MTU at 1492.
I set the Mac to have a static route to the modem. Using the modem in pure bridge mode was not working because the Mac was likely not setting up a proper PPPoE connection. Don't know why...
Internet is working and from what I can tell, the Mac is getting a good solid DS of 7196, US is 894.
For all those thinking they need one of the "Qwest Approved" modems, I sure hope they stop at these forums first to do some research! |
