fax machine

I have a separate fax machine. How do I receive faxes on this machine through magic jack? The phone line rings but I received no fax. I could hear the fax tone on the message that was left on the magic jack voice mail in my email account.
I also want my answering machine to pick up the messages instead of leaving on the magic jack voicemail, since I don't check my email account on a daily basis.

fax machines rarely work,
but answering machines
should if they pick up on
the first few rings.

check into your fax machines distinctive ring features, sometimes you can adjust the fax machine to be less sensitive about the ring frequency's it hears.

Also i heard a rumour somewhere that Magicjack was looking into providing distintive ring service whitch would be the answer to your prayers!

1. Fax machines use an old transmission standard that is decades old. It requires ALL data to arrive with precise time limits and in the correct order.

VOIP, being designed for voice, allows for lost data packets and will throw out any data packets that arrive late. This causes many fax's to fail.

2. Many new fax machines use a very high speed which doesn't work well under VOIP. Most people feel that setting your machine to the 9600 speed provides the best chance for faxing to work.

Here's a link to a page that describes the problem of faxing over VOIP and discusses the 9600 speed solution in more detail:
