There are no requests for password that way, and my frustration level is way down. However, email protocol timing restraints are usually more strict than for simple web browsing, so that is where the symptom may show up first for many users.
NetFixer posted : The only difference between using the isp.att.net and the att.yahoo.com email servers is simply the name entered into the server name fields in your email client. There is nothing mysterious or complicated.

Where you formerly used smtp.att.yahoo.com with SSL on port 465 to send email, you would only change the server name to fmailhost.isp.att.net. When you use smtp.att.yahoo.com or fmailhost.isp.att.net you will also need to tell your email client that the outbound server uses authentication (the mail.bellsouth.net SMTP server does not require this).

Where you formerly used pop.att.yahoo.com with SSL on port 995 to receive email, you would only change the server name to fpostoffice.isp.att.net.

Make sure that you are using the full email address for the email account name. Use myname@att.net or myname@bellshouth.net, not just myname whether you are using the att.yahoo.com, isp.att.net, or bellsouth.net email servers. Also make certain that you have setup your email client to remember your password.

I would suggest that before you make any changes to your email client, that you make sure that whatever AV you are using is not setup to do email scanning. I have never seen an AV program that did email scanning that did not eventually cause problems (especially if the email needs to use SSL and/or something other than the standard port 25 for SMTP and/or port 110 for POP3 retrieval). I can think of no reason for any AV to need to intercept email anyway, since the real-time file system and/or memory monitoring should accomplish the same thing without clobbering your email configuration (and if your email uses SSL, the AV program won't really be able to decrypt the traffic stream anyway).

I don't have a Windows Vista system available to be able to post screen shots, but here are screen shots from Outlook Express on a Windows XP PC. The actual placement of the setup information will be different than with Windows Mail on Windows Vista, but that actual setup information is the same.

[att=1]

[att=2]

[att=3]

Note: The reason I am emphasizing checking the settings on your PC is that I am not currently seeing any problems with the att.yahoo.com, the isp.att.net or the bellsouth.net email servers, so it is possible that the problems you are having are local to you.
--
History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.
-- Dwight D.
reeves1 posted : Well, my euphoria at getting my ATT e-mail downloaded by switching to the old BellSouth servers was premature. This morning the old problem was back-I was asked to log on, and when I did I was asked to do so again, on and on ad infinitum. Unless and until another solution is found, I guess I'll just go to ATT's webmail address until ATT gets enough complaints to do something about the problem. I would try the fmail and fpostoffice technique you mentioned, but am fuzzy on just what to do - can you give me a step-by-step tutorial? Thanks, Robert

The 25/110 port numbers came up automatically when I entered the mail.bellsouth designations for the servers. I don't understand the fmail and fpostoffice designations you mentioned for ATT, though - is that another way around the problem?

The att.net email servers are indeed just another way to access the same email (redundancy is always good). The primary reason for their use over the bellsouth.net server is the added security of SSL encryption during transit, and the fact that the fmailhost.isp.att.net SMTP server can be used from anywhere, not just from an AT&T/BellSouth DSL connection. As I said previously, I use both. I primarily use the bellsouth.net servers on my local network, but I use the SSL encrypted att.net servers on my notebooks which are often used on foreign (untrusted) networks.

From time to time I notice in my fetchmail logs that whichever AT&T email servers I am using will be showing error responses. When that happens, I just switch to another server and the problem is then usually resolved. Sometimes the att.yahoo.com servers are the most reliable. Redundancy is always good, and triple redundancy is even better. A lot of people ore upset with the move to the att.yahoo servers, but I see it as just another redundant path.
--
History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.
-- Dwight D. I don't understand the fmail and fpostoffice designations you mentioned for ATT, though - is that another way around the problem? I simply had the non-working pop.att.yahoo.com and smtp.att.yahoo.com before, and didn't use any such designations. Anyway, I'm delighted to be back in business, assuming things continue to work on the Bellsouth servers - I never had much trouble with those. Seems like the trouble really started with the conversion to the Yahoo servers. When on the road, I can always use the att.net website to get my mail, so that won't be a problem if my mail continues to work.

Many, many thanks for your generosity in helping me with my problem.
NetFixer posted : Since you say you are using the 465/995 ports, I will assume that you are also using smtp.att.yahoo.com and pop.att.yahoo.com as the email servers. If that is the case, then try going back to the bellsouth.net and/or att.net servers to see if that helps. I have also noticed that lately the att.yahoo.com email servers frequently had authentication problems and/or very long response times. Switching back to the bellsouth.net servers on my desktop PCs and the att.net servers on my notebooks cured that problem for me.

Here are the settings for the bellsouth.net servers:
SMTP: mail.bellsouth.net port 25
POP3: mail.bellsouth.net port 110

Here are the settings for the att.net servers:
SMTP: fmailhost.isp.att.net, SSL, port 465
POP3: fpostoffice.isp.att.net, SSL, port 995

You probably will not be able to find an AT&T CSR who will admit that this will work because AT&T wants everyone to totally migrate to the att.yahoo.com email platform. Nonetheless, it most definitely still works. I use both the bellsouth.net and att.net servers with no problems. The only caveat is that the bellsouth.net SMTP server is only accessible from an att.net/bellsouth.net network connection, so using it on a notebook or other portable device may not work when away from home. OTOH, the SSL att.net servers are available from anywhere.
--
History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid.
-- Dwight D.
reeves1 posted : I have a chronic problem with ATT e-mail via Yahoo.com. I use Windows Mail in Vista, and have used it since i installed Vista several years ago. I have a Bellsouth.net address. The mail has worked well most of the time, but for the last 2 weeks I have had a problem that makes it unusable except on rare occasions. When I boot up Windows Mail in Vista and try to download and/or send messages, I am asked to enter username and password. When I do so, the same sign-on window pops up again. This repeats over and over. I have contacted ATT tech support on this about 1/2 dozen times. Each time the rep works on the problem, having me re-enter everything in the configuration, turning off the e-mail scanner in my AVG, turning off the firewall, changing port designations, taking control of my computer, or some other effort. After 30 minutes to an hour of troubleshooting, something is done which causes the download to proceed, and I hang up thinking all is well. After a short while (from a few minutes to a day), the problem starts again, and a check of my configuration shows nothing has changed. I am exhausted with calling ATT - the people are polite and try hard, but it's like going to half a dozen doctors with a problem, and they all have a different diagnosis and treatment for the problem, none of which work permanently. I'm using the 465/995 ports, my username and password is entered correctly. i can access my mail by going to att.net, but that's a clunky program. I don't want to abandon my decade-old bellsouth.net address, so would like to solve the problem. Does anyone know the problem and/or a solution? Nothing I've read on the forum so far works for me. Thanks, Robert.

I run my own in-house email server, and it polls a number of external mailboxes every five minutes (including several AT&T accounts) using the fetchmail daemon in order to merge those external accounts into the user's local inbox. I have seen no evidence that there is any kind of system wide outage for AT&T email. The current fetchmail log restarted three days ago (and I am too lazy to extract the older logs from the archive to check further back), and the only "failures" it reports is three authentication failures over those three days (which were caused by a delayed response which disappeared when a retry was done).

FYI, if you are having some sort of problem with the *.att.yahoo.com email servers, you can also still use the old mail.bellsouth.net server. This is not widely publicized because AT&T wants you to use the Yahoo servers, but the servers are mirrored and you can still receive and send using either the *.att.yahoo.com servers or the mail.bellsouth.net server.

The *.isp.att.net servers are also still available for your use:
SMTP: fmailhost.isp.att.net, SSL, port 465
POP3: fpostoffice.isp.att.net, SSL, port 995

EDIT: On second thought, AT&T has been doing some network infrastructure changes that may be effecting some users more than others.

These traceroutes show what I mean:

Tracing route to pop.att.yahoo.com [68.142.206.218]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms	dcs-gw1.dcs-net [192.168.10.1]
2 10 ms 10 ms 9 ms	68.216.204.212
3 29 ms 10 ms 9 ms	68.216.204.37
4 12 ms 10 ms 10 ms	65.83.237.110
5 11 ms 9 ms 9 ms	65.83.238.90
6 14 ms 12 ms 10 ms	65.83.238.150
7 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms	cr2.nsvtn.ip.att.net [12.123.129.94]
8 30 ms 29 ms 29 ms	cr2.attga.ip.att.net [12.122.1.241]
9 29 ms 30 ms 29 ms	cr83.dlstx.ip.att.net [12.123.18.109]
10 35 ms 47 ms 48 ms	gar8.dlstx.ip.att.net [12.122.139.9]
11 29 ms 30 ms 30 ms	12.86.20.18
12 30 ms 30 ms 29 ms	ae2-p110.msr2.mud.yahoo.com [216.115.104.109]
13 29 ms 30 ms 30 ms	te-9-1.fab1-a-gdc.mud.yahoo.com [209.191.78.135]
14 30 ms 29 ms 30 ms	ten-8-1.bas2.mud.yahoo.com [68.142.193.27]
15 31 ms 30 ms 30 ms	pop2.sbc.mail.vip.mud.yahoo.com [68.142.206.218]
Trace Complete.

Tracing route to mail.bellsouth.net [204.127.217.17]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms	dcs-gw1.dcs-net [192.168.10.1]
2 10 ms 9 ms 10 ms	68.216.204.65
3 12 ms 11 ms 12 ms	68.216.204.37
4 11 ms 13 ms 11 ms	65.83.237.122
5 12 ms 11 ms 11 ms	65.83.238.104
6 10 ms 15 ms 11 ms	65.83.238.150
7 75 ms 76 ms 76 ms	cr1.nsvtn.ip.att.net [12.123.129.54]
8 75 ms 75 ms 74 ms	cr1.sl9mo.ip.att.net [12.122.28.62]
9 73 ms 75 ms 74 ms	cr2.sffca.ip.att.net [12.122.28.57]
10 75 ms 75 ms 73 ms	cr1.sffca.ip.att.net [12.122.3.69]
11 74 ms 74 ms 75 ms	12.83.59.5
12 76 ms 73 ms 74 ms	151.164.38.28
13 74 ms 75 ms 74 ms	ded2-p8-0.snfcca.sbcglobal.net [151.164.95.113]
14 77 ms 75 ms 77 ms	attsi-2of2-san-francisco-1155380.cust-rtr.pacbell.net [64.172. 39.78]
15 77 ms 76 ms 76 ms	207.115.16.50
16 * * *	Request timed out.
17 75 ms 76 ms 76 ms	mail.bellsouth.net [204.127.217.17]
Trace Complete.

Tracing route to fpostoffice.isp.att.net [207.115.11.18]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms	dcs-gw1.dcs-net [192.168.10.1]
2 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms	68.216.204.65
3 13 ms 10 ms 12 ms	68.216.204.37
4 11 ms 12 ms 10 ms	65.83.237.104
5 11 ms 10 ms 11 ms	12.83.10.122
6 10 ms 13 ms 11 ms	65.83.238.150
7 76 ms 75 ms 74 ms	cr1.nsvtn.ip.att.net [12.123.129.38]
8 74 ms 77 ms 74 ms	cr1.sl9mo.ip.att.net [12.122.28.62]
9 75 ms 76 ms 77 ms	cr2.sffca.ip.att.net [12.122.28.57]
10 75 ms 78 ms 75 ms	cr1.sffca.ip.att.net [12.122.3.69]
11 78 ms 74 ms 78 ms	12.83.59.17
12 74 ms 74 ms 146 ms	151.164.38.28
13 75 ms 75 ms 72 ms	ded2-p13-0.snfcca.sbcglobal.net [151.164.243.62]
14 79 ms 76 ms 76 ms	attsi-1of2-san-francisco-1155377.cust-rtr.pacbell.net [64.172. 39.62]
15 78 ms 76 ms 78 ms	207.115.16.54
16 * * *	Request timed out.
17 76 ms 75 ms 77 ms	fpostoffice.isp.att.net [207.115.11.18]
Trace Complete.

Interestingly, mail.bellsouth.net and fpostoffice.isp.att.net which used to be hosted in GA and TX respectively, now appear to have been relocated to CA. Latest was to reset my winsock in DOS. Have done that and still constant errors. If I close out Outlook, it'll work, but then it starts with new errors. I was told I should buy the new MS Office Suite, since the Outlook 2000 is most likely no longer compatible. I'm going to start switching my email to GMAIL accounts and be done with the Bellsouth BS. All of my settings have been changed over and as far as they are concerned it's my problem not theirs...though have to say they are very nice when they're telling you they can't help.
NormanS posted : Yahoo! did not "join with AT&T". Originally, SBC contracted with Yahoo! to provide email service, and some other stuff, to SBC DSL customers. Then SBC bought AT&T. Then SBC changed the corporate ID from SBC to AT&T. But I use two clients which are not as common as those I've enumerated above: Pegasus Mail (email program) and Mercury/32 (MTA). Written by the same author.
MGBFan posted : Rich,

just want to let you know - you are not alone. With Bellsouth, there was never a problem with email. With the shift to ATT and then to Yahoo, email is not reliable any more. First, with nothing changing on my laptop, I get the messages that Outlook can't connect to the server. If I wait a few minutes or a few hours and don't change a thing (not even reboot windows :o ) and all of a sudden, connectivity is back - best I can figure, the email servers are so overloaded they can't respond back to the clients in a timely fashion and the client just times out. Next, is the delay in getting email. Messages are delayed from a few minutes to over 24 hours from showing in my inbox. (My unscientific poll is having folks send emails to both mine and my wife's account and watching when the emails show up in the inbox.) And unfortunately, it seems that a new trend is starting where some messages are not showing up at all.

While I hang on to my Bellsouth address since it has been with me a long time and many family, friends and collegues have it, I have started a transition to another email provider.
