Actiontec GT701-WG as printer connection?

I just switched to Comcast and so have this Actiontec wireless gateway just sitting on the shelf. I'd like to use it to connect my ethernet printer to my new wireless network if possible. I don't even know what to call the function I'm hoping for.

Basically, I'd like the wireless part of the unit to connect to my wifi network (instead of being the source of a network), and then I would connect an ethernet cable between the Actiontec and my ethernet printer, effectively turning the Actiontec into a wifi dongle for the printer.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Allen

Is this possible? Yes, but not likely... With different firmware it is possible that you could make a wireless bridge to connect your ethernet printer.

..ever tried OpenWRT?

I think this *might* be possible.. but I've never tried it. I know I've turned my old GT701's into repeaters and APs.

Thanks - I didn't know about OpenWRT. Unlikely I'll dive into that, just given practical time considerations, but it's good to know about.

Do you know what this functionality would even be called? It doesn't seem like it's quite like a wireless repeater, though it's filling the same role at the intake end (capturing a wifi signal at the periphery of your range). Rather than repeat that back out over wifi, I just want to stub it out over ethernet. I'm thinking if I knew some relevant terminology I might be able to search more effectively for a possible solution.

Cheers,

Allen
