Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. This is largely a function of the distance from the exchange. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

What BigVe See Profile posted is correct as a general rule. However with the slower speed package that you're on, and an outstanding signal margin, you should be in good shape.

Even though the line atten. reading is 57db?!?

If I ask for a higher speed it appears to me that my telephone line is not capable of such, is that assumption correct?

Thanks much, guys.

57 db of atten isn't really that bad. Your noise margin indicates that you'd be able to move up to 1.5 meg with no issues, but that's going to be about the max. But it's double what you've got now!
