EpixHD

If you've not checked out »www.epixHD.com you might want to. The movies it streams have zero jerkiness or sound on my 3G connection and is a first class experience on my HD enabled laptop. Prolly need the unlimited account though.

Thanks Jim, I finally got my code and the movies look great on my HD computer monitor. Still see a lot of compression, I think the compression is matched to the speed at the time you watch the movie less throughput more compression.

I got a pass code for this past weekend - I watched them on my Samsung SyncMaster 753 with a hardwired 10Mb connection, and ..... I was not impressed - lots of compression. - perhaps they would play better over a FIOS connection.

I have seen better quality from HULU.

How does Hulu scale up on a 40+ flat screen? That look good?

I have not upscaled HULU - I was commenting on what is viewed from a desktop computer.

Perhaps someone else has displayed HULU on a large screen TV.

Their comments would be appreciated.

HULU like most streaming video services adjust their throughput according to your bandwidth, if your bandwidth is low you will probably only be able to see good quality at lower resolutions. More bandwidth = better quality video, HULU goes all the way up to 720p or HiDef but apparently you need a throughput of around 3500kbps to view 720p. Check out their specs here: »www.hulu.com/support .
This doesn’t mean you need high bandwidth to see movies with decent quality, I noticed that Epix also adjust compression according to bandwidth, when you see scenes with little to no action in them the quality on larger monitors looks good, there is less picture information attached to those scenes so you have less compression and little artifacting or pixilation. As soon as you get into a portion of the movie that has more action you will notice more pixilation the scenes my stutter there is just too much information for your bandwidth and screen size, but if you drop your screen resolution or screen size (smaller monitor) you should see an improvement in quality. Throughput or bandwidth and screen resolution work together, higher bandwidth = larger screen resolution.
Also most professional HD video is recorded at about 100mbps (average), believe it or not this is also compressed at the time it is recorded. Blue ray DVD and what you see on cable has been compressed down to around 25mbps for HD and no more than 9000kbps for SD.
Video software engineers are coming up with better video compression or analogryms every day, your best compression for the web is coming from Adobe Flash. Adobe has recently released F4V to eventually replace FLV files, F4V which uses mpeg4 compression can only play with Flash player 9 and above. What Adobe is doing with each new release of their flash software is dropping the amount of bandwidth needed to view videos on the web.
What I have tried to explain is what we are up against trying to view good quality video today on the web with the amount of bandwidth available to us

Yea trying to watch HD Video using a wireless EVDO connection on a computer. That's why I have Directv and a flat screen tv. No hassle and excellent picture quality.

I think we will eventually get there though, video on the web is the future. It just may take a little longer for us rural folks
