I still say your network guys need to look at setting up QOS, and prioritizing certain traffic and de-prioritizing other traffic.

Certainly that could increase your ping if your line is choked with net traffic because ping is low priority (and not actually required at all except for testing).

We have AT&T branded Covad 1.5 mbps SDSL (from before AT&T remerged with SBC), and have only had issues with it once in many years (bad connection on card in telco CO). We use SonicWall routers for VPN to our factory 1700 miles away for 6-8 PC's and 2 printers that print from factory (besides locally). But I dont see what its going to tell you that we don't already see.\

The next trouble shooting step is to try a different modem and have a computer directly connected to it at a time when you see the elevated pings, if you still get them then it up to Covad at that point to track down and fix the problem.

Covad ADSL 8/1 comes into my office, ethernet plugs into Covad supplied motorola router supplying 5 static IPs. Our office firewall is a rideway and is has a static ip address, after that is our network with harddrive server, database server and outlook server. What could cause the problem?

My guess would be to check traffic levels, I betting something is using all of the bandwidth witch could cause this.

If using windows did you make sure to turn off "Use default gateway on the remote network", if its on all of your traffic on that computer goes though the VPN not just work stuff, so your ping will have a high latency to say google.

We also have an ADSL 8/1 connection in the office for internet connected to our firewall/data network. I connect from home - Verison FIOs 10/2 (VPN/Remote Desktop) to that network and it crawls. I check ping times periodically and I get ping times close to 1000ms, but consistently at 500ms. Occasionally, I see ping times in the teens and the remote desktop moves nicely. Usually, it sucks. When I ping and check a speedtest from my home network without being connected to the VPN, pings are in the teens and I see close to 10/2.

Covad changed the backhaul and when they do it, ping times drop to the teens for a short while then move to 500s. They ping their router and see the ping times. They sent a tech out and he saw nothing wrong. My IT people said they isolated the problem by removing our network and saw slow speeds before the network. We disconnected the network and Covad was unable to ping the router.

Bottom line, something is wrong because my remote experience is awful on the ADSL and ping times are clearly unacceptable. The other DSL line is amazing and we are 4100 feet from the CO.
