| Un-Believable.
I had a 2007 Toyota Yaris come in for a fuel leak and check engine light on. They said they can not fill the tank or else gas starts leaking. I can see some stains on the side of the tank and got authorization to pull the tank out for inspection. When I get it out I can not believe what I saw. Someone could not get the ring for the fuel pump module on correctly so they wedged some cardboard between the ring and module to push it down in an attempt to make it seal. The threads on the tank were slightly deformed in one small spot but I was able to get the ring on properly and tighten it down to get the pump to seal. I just can't believe someone, a professional or even a DIYer would risk lives trying to rig something like this.
Sorry about the pics. I bought a cell phone with a camera so I could keep my DSLR away from work. -- mbsastronomy.com |

That ranks up there with the copper fuel line repair with compression fittings I removed from a F/I Cougar and the steering coupler (aka rag joint) held together with coat hanger wires since all of the rubber of the rag joint was missing letting the steering wheel and upper shaft turn freely with no control of the steering until they wired it up instead of buying a $5 to $10 dollar part.
Ever wonder why your zip ties are almost all gone after you hire a new tech in training?

I assume that it was out of warranty due to mileage? I just can't think of any reason why someone would have been screwing with that. -- Striving for Parfection. |

1 edit | Wild guess. Owner puts diesel in tank which disables vehicle and then has his son or friendly shade tree or relative come over to house after getting it towed home and they drop the tank, pull the pump sensor assembly out to siphon the diesel fuel out after not being able to siphon from the fill neck? Then when putting it back they crossed the threads and didn't know it until gas leaked on the first fill up. So they dropped the tank again trying their cardboard packing trick and it possibly worked until the cardboard lost the holding pressure or got wet with gas a few times. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

I think it had about 50,000 miles on it. The car was actually in poor shape. There were signs of body work on the left rear where the fuel filler is located. Paint over spray on the filler neck and the inner fender well. The bumpers (yes plural as in both front and rear) had signs of intimate encounters with other vehicles and or objects and the inside smelled like shit.
I was thinking maybe a body shop had to remove the tank due to damage from an accident and either new or junkyard tank didn't come with a pump. -- mbsastronomy.com |
