| Qwest GT701-WG + DI604 + VNC = Need Help ASAP
Hello, Thanks in advance.
Here's the background: yesterday the Modem went down for whatever reason and Needed a hard reset (maybe not needed but its what happened) I managed to get the modem back up and running with the DI-604 after much googling and a lot of stumbling around (very little knowledge of this sort) I was able to get the internet to all the computers hooked to the network (about 13) Network consists of a DSL modem hardwired to a DI604 thats wired to a CISCO switch/router/hub (not sure I didn't set it up) then to individual computers.
But comes the issue: we have VNC on 10 of the machines and I cant seem to connect from outside the network. The ports are forwarded correctly on the router ( I believe the only reason we have the router is so we can forward ports for VNC) and I can connect internally via the IP addresses assigned by the router. This leads me to believe that there is an error between the modem and the router. Ive tried all the fumbling I can with DMZs and portforwarding on the Modem yet nothing works.
I really need to get this working again by this evening so reports can go out to clients over night. Ill be here all day until its fixed and would appreciate any help you can provide.
I posted in the QWEST forum since I believe the problem is in the modem but if this belongs elsewhere please let me know.
And thank you to those that helped out other people on this site as searching old threads helped me get the modem and router cooperating to this point.
Thanks, Jeremy |

| Just taking a guess here. I take it when you said that you had to "hard reset" the "modem, you mean you reset it to factory defaults, correct?
If that is the case, the issue is that you're probably running double NAT. You want to configure the GT701-WG in bridged mode. That "modem" is actually a router by default. Here's a link to some instructions I found to configure it as a bridge.

Once that's done, you'll want to configure the D-Link back the way it was. I don't know those exact settings, but if I had to guess you currently changed it to plain DHCP and need to revert back to PPPoE.
If you didn't change anything else on the D-Link, once the "modem" is in bridge mode and you're getting a PPPoE connection on the D-Link, you should be good to go.
Good luck. |

1 edit | Yes I did mean I reset it to factory defaults via reset button (couldn't access Modem to do it via program reset).
Since i have the new firmware version (i reinstalled that after the reset) I attempted to follow the linked tutorial as best as possible. I did everything except turning off the NAT. Every time i click apply after checking Off it reloads the page and its still on.
Other then that it now works. So I'm not sure if the NAT is necessary or not.
Thank you so much. |

Have you ever SSH into your router? I usually go through PuTTY and do a SSH Tunnel to all the workstations behind it. |

| reply to DustGrazer said by DustGrazer :I did everything except turning off the NAT. Every time i click apply after checking Off it reloads the page and its still on. My 701wg in bridged mode says NAT is on also, but since the router is disabled it obviously has no effect. BTW I make use of the 701wg wireless to check my DSL stats. I have a usb wireless dongle on one of my pc's with a fixed address in the subnet of the 701 so I can access it's web page which is not otherwise available in bridged mode. |
