Suffering with 60 sec page loads

Pages would load acceptably fast before I replaced my modem.

I now have a Netopia 3346n-002, purchased used. Before plugging it in I used a paperclip to push the reset button in the back to get it back to factory. Then I changed the admin password and entered my ISP user/password.

The modem synched up and now I am online. Problem is I now have a high latency with every single page loaded. Google.com takes 20 seconds to load. CNN.com takes 60 seconds to load. I dont know what to do from here.

Can somebody assist?

1. Tweak: »/tweakr/block:···a=normal

2. Speakeasy Speed test:5136/648 and 5120/645 (did not see how to link in URL from speakeasy)

3. Line Quality test: »/linequality/nil/2581686

4. DSL connection, ATT West provider. I have a Netopia 3346n-002 modem. No router.

5. Modem uses PPPOE

6. not sure

7. WinXP/SP3.

8. Advertised speed "up to 6Mb" Modem synchs at 6013/768

9. Home network with modem/router to the internet.

10. NAT router Netopia 3346n-002

11. Access point is fairly close. I dont know the actual distance (2k ft?)

By the way...

TCP receive=56628
Windows scaling = Time stamping = Selective acks = Path MTU = Black hole = DEFAULT
Dialup (RAS) = Max Dup Acks = TTL = or
MTU=1492

There seems to be three adapter settings from the pull down. I have only one NIC card.
The settings say:
1)Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC#2
2)Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC
3)Microsoft TV/Video connection

Data download really hauls... but simple web pages take 20-60 seconds to complete.

Example when going to Yahoo, the status messages say...
a) Looking up www.Yahoo.com (duration 30 sec)
b) Transferring data (duration 20 seconds)
c) page appears (hour glass does not stop until 10 seconds after)

• The only thing that changed is the MODEM. Can you get your old or a test MODEM?

• Try power cycling your MODEM and PC.

• Your LQT links to a Tweak Test. Can you post the correct link?

• Try dropping the site URL into the browser and see if that works any better.

• Read this on page stalls and freezes.

»Tweaking FAQ »Stalls and freezes

• Read this to remove the multiple adapters.

»Tweaking FAQ »I have duplicate adapter entries in DrTcp. What can I do?

When I click on the LQT link above it takes me to the right place...

The Stalls and Freezes page you referenced has helped immensely. I think it is fixed
but would like you to verify things seem ok by what you see. Then, I will fill you in on the second
half of my problem. You will get a chuckle out of it.

But first I tried to follow the "Duplicate Adapter" faq. The document does not seem to track the scenario
I have in my system or I am misunderstanding what we are attempting to do. 1) I can not rename the Adapter "driver"
name via the network properties and 2) I can not find the drive name
via the Regedit "find". Even when I follow the registry path in the faq I don't see the name show up anywhere.
"Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC". Summary, I can not track the document to get rid of the dup entry.
I am not sure how critical this is. Like I said, the Stalls and Freezes page helped a lot.

Repeat of Tweak and LQT's:
»/tweakr/block:···a=normal
»/linequality/nil/2581969

If you believe things are ok, I will describe to you why I think my Plasma TV unstableizes my environment.

1 edit
• The dup NIC FAQ is a little hard to follow. It is really a cosmetic thing. What you enter for the MTU is global to all adapters.

• Just to tidy things up, change your RWIN to 50820

• What worked in the FAQ and what did you find?

Ok so here is the story.

I noticed my Bittorrents not having the DL speed I once had. In the past I have seen 300-450kbps. These last few months I am lucky to see anything over 100kbps. I got tired of it and jumped to the speedtests to see what might be going on. The tests were erratic at best ranging from 1500 to 4700 but usually 3600. Historic benchmarks were just over 5000.

After being threatened with a truck roll, and being out-of-work broke, I took my equipment to the phone-box. Right there I got a rock stable 5110kbps. The speakeasy needle not jumbling around or anything. So this prompted the Q, what is going on in the house???

I unplugged EVERYTHING in the house… including the refrigerator and unplugged the telephone. The only things plugged in the whole house were the computer, monitor, modem and the WRT54GX modem. Speedtests were consistent at 4700 but why the drop of 400k from the phone box??? I took the Router off line and connected to the modem directly. Then I got 5085kbps!!! The modem was responsible for loosing 400k of bandwidth right off the top. I then bought a used Netopia 3346n-002 in the mean time and that is what we have been working with here.

Anyway, I started my BT’s to give me time to think about this some more. I started plugging things back in around the house with no ill effects. Then, just to get something to listen to in the house I turned on my 3 month old 54 inch plasma TV. My BT download speed took a nose dive. I did not believe it at first, so I turned it back off, then on, then off and to my surprise, there was an exact correlation. I jump to the speedtests and they are again all over the map.

So what I have been doing since learning of this is getting the Netopia online to serve the bittorrents with the old Linksys as the wireless access point. The Netopia somehow introduced the stalls/freezing. Everything seems to be configured and working well now. I don’t mind the wireless loosing 400k so now I am good to go.

Now what I am left working on is why the Plasma TV sends my connection into the toilet. It is plugged into the wall,. that that is all. There is however a phone jack right behind it. I am wondering if the TV is feeding into the phone line from there even if there is no circuitry connected to the phone jack. My next step is to deactivate the jack from the phone box outside and see what happens.

Have you ever heard of anything like this? Anything special you would do if you were me?

Thanks for the updated RWIN

Until Later,
Eric

oh yes... what worked in the FAQ was assigning a static IP to the computer. This got rid of the stall/delays or at least make things much more tolerable.

Last night I went out to the phone box to deactivate the line that runs behind the Plasma TV. I thought I was able to control whether a plug was live or not from there. I guess I was wrong. I may have been able to do this before getting wired for DSL but not anymore. Either the phone service is live for the whole house or it is not.

So I am guessing your work here is done and I would have to continue this thread in a different forum, Correct???

To prepare to support my theory that the Plasma TV is the source of the problem what do you think I should do? I was thinking to have two different line quality tests ready. One with the Plasma turned off and the next with it turned on.

Or maybe there is something better to do? Whatcha think?

• Is there is filter on the TV? Yes, I have seen RFI causing problems. One guy has his MODEM stacked on hos box right over the power supply. My guess is that the TV is bleeding off RFI from the TV connection into your power system. You can try a power surge/RFI strip from the TV to the plug in the wall.

• If the issue has been fixed, what's left for another forum?

That’s about as good as it gets. It isn’t going to get much better than that. Put a fork in it you’re done.

Iam already using a surge protector as shown here. Also...and this realy gets me, the TV is located 10 paces away through a wall. So my theory is that either the air waves are inteferring or the sucking of electricity away from the modem is the problem.

>>> If the issue has been fixed, what's left for another forum?

It is not fixed. One person on the computer suffers if another wants to watch TV.

The TV is rated at 600 Watts and I am guessing it will need to suck power to properly perform. I'am guessing this is introducing a variable power to the modem or like you say, RFI from 10 paces away.

I think there is an AT&T form somewhere that might be useful.

I will look back here to see if you have any closing comments. Like you say, the tweaks are done. Good job and thanks for the assistance.

Eric
