| [Auto] AJAC car of the year awards announced
I mentioned in another thread recently that VW is going to pursue being the World's number 1 auto maker (in something like 5-10 years). They are currently number 3 (I believe Toyota and GM were the only ones ahead of them). In this list, VW AG is well represented with 6 winners in the 12 categories.
Here is the list:
The winners of each category are:
Small Car Under $21,000: Mazda3
Small Car Over $21,000: Mazda3 Sport
Family Car Under $30,000: Volkswagen Golf Wagon TDI
Family Car Over $30,000: Ford Taurus
Luxury Car Over $50,000: BMW 335d Sedan
Prestige Over $75,000: Porsche Panamera Turbo
Sport/Performance Under $50,000: Volkswagen Golf GTI
Sport/Performance Over $50,000: Audi S4
Convertible: Audi A5 Cabriolet
SUV/CUV Under $35,000: Subaru Outback
SUV/CUV $35,000 to $60,000: Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel
SUV/CUV Over $60,000: Lexus RX450h

I was actually at the VW dealership yesterday to see what was new and was told that going forward, all new models will be available with a TDI option. Also, there is going to be a new product launched and most likely made at the new Chattanooga facility late 2011 or early 2012. Since the Jetta is currently larger and more expensive than cars like the Civic and Corolla, a new sedan will launch to help VW compete in that market. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

no, they are third...their goal is to become number one within the next 5-10 years though.

you can play around on the site to view or build a 335d, but it is a web based application, so i can't link directly to it.

| reply to dirtyjeffer I like the Mazda 3, seems like a fun thing to drive. VW needs an inexpensive car (something along the lines of the rabbit but with greater durability), the Golf (though nice) is over priced for what you get.
On the subject of cars, it appears that Ford has beat quarterly expectations, though I think the cash for clunkers was the reason, and next quarter things might reverse."Revenue came in $31 billion, which was 9% higher than analysts had estimated. Meanwhile, the pace of cost reductions beat Ford's own projections. The automaker reduced automotive costs by $1 billion in the quarter, bringing the nine-month total to $4.9 billion, ahead of the full-year 2009 target of $4 billion." »www.thestreet.com/story/10620502···=GOOGLEN |

VW needs an inexpensive car (something along the lines of the rabbit but with greater durability), the Golf (though nice) is over priced for what you get. VW is going to be launching a new product next year (i believe)...the only "cheap" car they currently have (and only in Canada) is the City Golf...it is basically a last gen Golf that is imported here to compete in the $15,000 market (although most of them are probably equipped to about the $20,000 mark)...the only problem with that car is it is rather dated, especially its rather uninspiring 115HP 2.0L 4 cylinder engine...their new car will compete much better against the likes of the Civic and Corolla in terms of pricing and overall value...my guess is it will be something like a Polo sedan...perhaps a revival of the "Fox" nameplate is due back?
the Golf is pricier than its competitors, but is often better equipped...a mid-level TDI Golf is about $25,000 and is pretty well equipped meaning it isn't that much more than a well equipped Corolla or Civic. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

1 edit | They have a bunch of other small cars too, that I've seen in the Caribbean, the Lupo & the Gol(?). They're clearly available in other parts of the world, I don't know why they don't bring them here? They need to stop looking at the high end of the market & concentrate on the low end. And increase the reliability, especially of the components. |

I didn't know that. the Tiguan is available in a TDI, but not in North America...my guy at the VW dealership received confirmation that every new VW from 2010 and forward will be available in a TDI...the problem is, we may not see a Tiguan here, but it is possible its replacement will be. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |

| reply to Mike2009 that is nice, but i don't know how much different from the Golf it would be...that said, it is also why i mentioned the Polo sedan (unless they rebadge it with a different name)...i don't think the 1.6L TDI engine is a "Clean Diesel" engine, which it would have to be in order to be sold in North America..that said, they could always dump the 2.0L in there...i can't imagine the 1.6L is that much cheaper to build...although, the even better fuel economy would really be a plus. -- Today's motto: Dearly beloved, We are gathered here today to bid farewell to personal responsibility and accountability. |
