| Add USB jump drive to PClinuxOS VirtualBox
Hello: I just recently started using PCLinuxOS Virtual Box and have discovered that I cannot plug my jump drive into the USB port and have it recognized.
I have 8 gigs memory in addition to fast processor. I have the guest tools installed but still no access to the jump drive and I have found nothing on here about adfding or :seeing: the jump drive with PCLinuxOS.
Thanks for any guidance or assistance.

1 edit | Are you using the open source version of VirtualBox? The open source version does not support USB devices. You'll need the download version from the VirtualBox web site for USB support.
EDIT: Actually it looks like Sun offers repos now for Debian and RPM based distros to obtain the non-opensource version of VirtualBox.

| reply to rexbinary I installed the version from the PCLinuxOS repo.
It is the same version currently available on the Sun site. I will try unplugging it without ejecting it and see what happens.
It is not a life and death requirement for my computer life or usage, I just thought that it would be a nice feature to include.
Thanks to one and all. I don't check in much and just thought I would ask.

1 edit | reply to hbarbrey I checked, and VirtualBox is not in the non-free repo for PCLinuxOS which leads me to believe it is the open source version that does not support USB.
Easiest way to tell is within VirtualBox, got to Help and About. If you don't see the Sun logo, it's the open-source version. -- Verizon FiOS subscriber since 2005 | Mac owner since 1990 | Fedora user since 2006 | CentOS user since 2007 | "Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing." - graysonf | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit. |

2 edits | reply to hbarbrey Even on the non-OSS edition, VirtualBox will not allow me to connect USB devices to guest machines with an openSUSE host. (The selections are greyed out.)
I've tried everything on the VirtualBox forums (editing the fstab), as well as solutions from other message boards, but still no luck. If you can get USB devices to work with VirtualBox, please share your solution! I would really love to be able to connect USB drives to a virtual machine. |

| reply to hbarbrey In VirtualBox on my Fedora 11 host, I enabled USB support and USB 2.0 support for my CentOS 5.4 guest. Booted my guest. Plugged in my flash drive to the host. Selected the USB device from the guest's menu, and it mounted. |

| Know anyone in Pflugerville ? My big brother lives their Thanks for the info. I will keep trying, not prone to give up. The CD works fine. It is really of low priority because I only installed the VirtualBox so that I could take a peek at Windows7.
thanks, Howard |

No problem Howard, let us know if you get it working. |

Is that to filer out devices you don't want the client to use or is it allowing these devices to be used by the client? |

Here is the example from the user manual: "The more criteria you specify, the more precisely devices will be selected. For instance, if you specify only a vendor ID of 046d, all devices produced by Logitech will be available to the guest." -- Verizon FiOS subscriber since 2005 | Mac owner since 1990 | Fedora user since 2006 | CentOS user since 2007 | "Anyone who is unwilling to learn is entitled to absolutely nothing." - graysonf | EDIT: I seldom post without an edit. |
