| reply to kw Re: TV Tuner Card Help
Cable companies are sending large numbers of free cable boxes to subscribers that dont have one and will need one which must cost them considerably. They apparently dont care about the cost in this respect.
If you qualify for a free cable box when they involuntarily * upgrade * you it might be a good idea to give it a shot before going to OTA only.
I didnt qualify for a free cable set top box because I already had two digital boxes but my neighbor got one for free because she didnt have one. |

| reply to kw Okay I got the card and installed it. I need to run to Radioshack a bit later on today and get a splitter and a short coax. I was bed-ridden yesterday with H1N1 or some nonsense, and was tinkering with it whenever I gathered the motivation to get up out of bed.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to share TV across the network. This can be achieved, right?
I'm running Windows 7, if that helps.
Thanks. |

| Well the Silicondust HDHomeRun can be accessed by any system on the network that has been properly setup. The same is probably true of the Monsoon Media HAVA series of products as well as internet streaming.
I dont know how you would multi-cast or broadcast live TV with a Hauppauge tuner though. If you're using Microsoft Media Center you can use Media Center Extenders but these arent PCs. Recorded TV can probably be accessed from other systems on the network but not Live TV (at least not in any way I am aware of off the top of my head).
Maybe Orb,
Never used it before personally,
.
Also, if you're sick especially with H1N1 then you should probably just take it easy and not risk spreading it to others. |

| Yeah, the Microsoft Media Center Extenders (Xbox 360) will allow for Live TV and access to the recorded TV Library whether it be restricted media or not. Other PCs that have access privileges to a the Recorded TV folder as a share would be able to access those files as well. The caveat there is that restricted media will not play on other PC systems whereas they will on Extenders.
If you dont use Media Center and instead use some other third party application. The recorded TV files will likely be in a simple mpeg2 format and wont have restrictions of any kind. The Xbox 360 should be able to play these files outside of the Media Center interface (NXE) and other systems should be able to access the shared folder.
However, since you dont have a cable box the chances of you coming across restricted media in your recordings is fairly low or at least greatly reduced. |
