I just upgraded to the 18Mb internet speed on Sat 10/31. On Sunday 11/1 speed tests show a speed in the 16Mb range. Is this the best I can expect or will it go a little higher? |

| reply to angelique Yep, 17.2 is about the best you'll see. If you're connecting through wifi, you may see a little less. With wifi in general, you can expect to get about 1/3rd of the advertised speed. That means 18mbps will just about max out a 54mbps wifi link.

Try »www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ |

| Use the speakeasy instead and use this »mirror.anl.gov/pub/fedora/linux/···386/iso/ download the DVD.iso and let it get to about 15% and see what the download is.
Depending on the servers load you should hit anywhere from 1.8 - 2MB/sec |

Also, try www.speedtest.net. I've been able to find very good test servers there. |

| reply to angelique 16Mb/s on Max 18 sounds about right. I have the Max 12 tier, and get around 10.5-10.7 Mb/s downloading from Usenet.
Typically, the overhead being used is around 10%. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

| Why? a) its all advertised as "UP TO" that speed, they never gauruntee it. b) if someone actually counted the bytes flying through the tubes, if you are getting close to 18, the overhead also consumes bytes, and the total would be about 18. Just because there's overhead, doesn't mean its false to say thats the speed. |

| reply to Doctor Four Actually it varies by many factors; load of the test servers, routing between your location and the test server. In many cases with U-verse your test results may be better at a more distant test server due to better routing (peering).
I am on the Max 12 and I get solid results from my WiFi connected laptop to the Atlanta Speakeasy test server.
