Handoff at vancouver, over to toronto, down to US. It has been like this for 7 months now. The crazy thing is, when I first got the connection in March/April of this year, it routed properly, and I had a consistent ping of 49ms, which was heaven. When the routing changed, I tried to get it resolved, but the help just hits a dead end, with "routing is based on fastest available route...", yeah yeah, I'll give the help desk staff the benefit of the doubt that they don't know any different, but it still sucks.

It would be good to see your tracert too, the more info the better. What part of Edmonton are you in?

Actually I have. They roughly do the same thing, route through vancouver (at least from my house). But their base ping is a little worse, about 85ms, plus yes it suffers from 'neighborhood traffic', so the ping can easily spike.

If only that were so! Well I know it used to be so, but it doesn't seem to be something the customer can call about and get changed.

Notice I said "except" DSLAM and CMTS congestion. This is a problem with TELUS's core network, not something out in someones neighbourhood.

I don't claim TELUS to be perfect, but to hear that Shaw always solves congestion problems on saturated nodes is laughable, I know people at Shaw and just like any ISP they have finite resources. They can't resolve every problem, every time and in a few days, splitting nodes takes time, just like turning additional transport to solve congestion. I have friends and coworkers who have switched from Shaw to TELUS because of ongoing node congestion, just like I have friends who have switched from TELUS to Shaw because their DSL service was terrible.

Clearly you have an underlying hatred of TELUS and have a hard on for Shaw. More power to you, but please troll elsewhere.

Oh, please. You have BC, AB, and ON. One of TELUS's primary routers handling traffic that is handed off to parts of Peer1 and Shaw and who knows who else has been so overloaded that it's latency is jumping to 100ms+ during peak hours. How is this NOT a huge problem?

Too bad all the good people at TELUS have retired or gone on to greener pastures or your network would be in much better shape. Granted, half of the issue is with your management and outsourcing but that's something I could go on and on about.

Face facts. No competent ISP leaves congestion on part of their infrastructure that isn't localized (at a DSLAM, CMTS, or whatnot) certain area for such a long period as TELUS. Any time I've seen this type of congestion with Shaw or any other decent ISP it's been rectified within a few days.

Oh wait, most TELUS customers are locked into contracts with huge penalties for getting out. That's how you keep the money rolling in!

NSSI at TELUS are either putting their head in the sands or have been completely outsourced to Manila.

It's easy to back seat admin when your not the one on the hook for fixing this stuff... Ever actually tried working on a a network of this scale... Not always easy....

I do agree that this taking a long time to fix... But to be honest shaw is no better when dealing with saturated node... Or certain other types of issues...Is that also Incompetence...? Be careful how you answer you might land up setting a double standard...

To be honest both Shaw and Telus are at times pathetic... They also both have times when they really shine..

The link(s) to Chicago were upgraded to OC-768 earlier this year, so It's not a bandwidth issue but they might still be working on circuits related to the project. In any event I'm sure the folks who look after the core network are working diligently to sort out the problem.

It's not like TELUS even has much bandwidth needs compared to any other ISP which offers reasonable connectivity.

Not true, I ping about 65 to a Battlefield server in NY for the last 4 years that I have been playing there. If it went to Vancouver first from Edmonton then back east I sure in the hell wouldnt be getting a ping like that.
