is this normal? SLOW INTERNET while COPYING FILES on WIFI

First of all i have Linksys WRT54GL 1.1 Tomato firmware v1.25
My ISP is AT&T 3.0mbps DSL w/ Siemens SpeedSteam 4100

when i am copying files on the other computer thru wifi, my internet speed drops, i can barely surf the internet

when i try to download files, the speed im getting is 5.97kbps(my normal speed download speed is 260-280kbps), i cant even watch videos on youtube(take ages to load)

i also try to play online games but the game is unplayable because it is so laggy(im not lagging when i am not copying files)

both of my computers have 54mbps card and i am receiving full bars of signal(excellent), is there any setting i should select in my wireless router to fix the problem or this is normal?

It sounds normal to me.

Wireless speed will be the bottle neck locally, so a file copy will use it all. Internet will also attempt to use wireless, so they conflict.

"so a file copy will use it all"

when i upgraded my linksys WRT54GL to tomato firmware, there is a setting for bandwith limit(cant remember exactly what its name)

can i set that to limit the bandwith for local area network and get a reserve for my internet connection? if possible what settings should i select?

"Internet will also attempt to use wireless, so they conflict."

also is there anyway to avoid conflict in local area network and internet? if possible how?

That limit you Internet speed not your Local connection speed, that will not help.

Not much you can do with these third party firmware. They only tap into features that are disabled. They don't improve your hardware. That's where most users don't understand. If you wireless router can only TX at a certain rate then DD-WRT and Tomato can cheap and increase the TX but then if you do that you might have RX issues so both have to balance out otherwise you'll run into errors in both the TX/RX.

G54 only 20 to 30mbps then on top of that the 10/100 max is 6-60mbps for wired connections.

N300 only 60 to 150mbps then on top of that the 10/100 max is 6-60mbps for wired connections.

N+300 only 60 to 150mbps then on top of that 10/100/1000 max is 6-60-600mbps for wired connections
