| V - The New series
Since there wasn't a dedicated thread to the new 2009 series itself I thought I'd make one since it premieres this Tuesday Nov 3rd.
Anyone excited about this one? I never saw the original but I admit the hype sort of took me in. There was a similar hype about Fringe before it first aired and it did not disappoint me... since BSG ended the sci-fi genre could use a good ongoing series.
I'm also happy to see Morena Baccarin again. I first discovered her in Stargate SG-1, thought she was quite beautiful and talented. I liked her better with long hair, but anyway
Hope it'll be good, but not holding my breath! |

| reply to TigerLord Can't wait to see how it works out. I just caught a couple of hours of the original on Sci-Fi, they were running some sort of "V" marathon.
Ditto on the Morena Baccarin comment, I loved her in Firefly. -- "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. L. Mencken

| reply to TigerLord I'll watch, I'm always up for just about anything Sci-Fi.... and always hope for the show to be at least half-way decent.
I didn't remember the original series all that much, it could have aired when I was working nights.... but I did take advantage of SyFy airing the whole thing today. Gave me something to do when I was stuck on the couch, feeling like cr*p. Thankfully, I started watching it on my dvr quite a bit after it started... so I never had to watch a single commercial! -- Humanity - The greatest natural disaster of all time. |

Considering Battlestar Galactica was a remake of an original and that it is to date my favorite TV series ever, a series that kept me waiting for more for the 5 years it took to see all seasons, guessing, arguing, and hypothesizing who the final 5 would be, who the final would be, etc...
Remakes *can* be good |

1 edit | reply to TigerLord I don't know how talented Morena Baccarin really is as an actress. She seems sort of typecast in these "superior begin" cosplay rolls. Christina Hendricks was a far better actress on Firefly then Morena.
well, old BSG was REALLY old, while V was on a decade ago. still, you do have a point |

TigerLord Resident Pentaxian Premium,Mod join:2002-06-09 Montreal | reply to TigerLord Christina was in 2 episodes of Firefly according to IMDB while Morena was in 14 of them...2 episodes is not a lot of material to determine an actress' talent. |

| reply to TigerLord What I meant is 2 episodes can hardly do justice to one's talent, in only one role. I find it hard to imagine you could determine the range of an actress in less than what was probably less than 30min of actual screen time among those two episodes...she could have been good for those 30min because the role fit her, but terrible in another setting...she seems to be part of the Mad Men show, which IU never heard of...
Again I've only seen Morena on 3 different shows, but we'll see how she does in V. |

2 edits | reply to TigerLord when you watch all the Firefly episodes - get back to me
you see, both Morena & Christina - Firefly rolls were in this high paid escort guild. but Morena acted the exact same way when she was with a paying client or not. Christina displayed several distinct persona's during the few hours we got to see her act in Firefly - that's why she won my respect as an actress.
That's probably why Morena got cast for "V" because her acting style is so monotonous. |

1 edit | I totally bought into the naive farm girl act she put on when she was discovered stowed away on Serenity. When she became herself I was like "damn... she's pretty good."
But Morena, at different times or in different shows, has shown a bit of range as well. -- "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." - H. L. Mencken

1 edit | reply to TigerLord I'll give it a spin, everyone says its so good I might just buy it on bluray outright... I have to admit I've became a bluray junkie, I just think the image you get is fantastic...
Joss Whedon is an unlucky guy... that's twice now he's been fucked over by FOX...Dollhouse is definitely getting the boot this year. It had potential in my opinion. Heard he's leaving drama/sci-fi and heading over to Glee... that's quite a change.
In any case, looking forward to V! |

1 edit | The biggest trip i have about Glee is that it's produced by the same guy that gave us Nip/Tuck . Nip/Tuck is about as messed up as a show can get, let alone all the sex they manage to have on it.
Then He gives us GLEE....
Meanehile a challenging sci-fi show is being kicked due to medicore ratings.
I always felt shows like Dollhouse, Dark Angel, Sarah Conner Chronicles, should have been on FX. There they can get gritter then on broadcast TV. Then put them on for 10 to 13 episode runs.
From what I have seen of the commercials for the new V, I think they will follow the old V very closley. It'll have a green message in it, like the old V, maybe even take a jab or two at the political climate.

| reply to TigerLord I was quite taken with Morena Baccarin in FireFly and it will be great to see what she can do with this role although Im not watching V just for her (thats just icing on the cake). I was quite taken with Christina Hendricks too mind you,
..
Anyway, I think they a have great cast and a cult classic to work with so its definitely worth a go. I cant imagine how they could go wrong with this (if it were on Fox i'm sure they could find a way though).
I vaguely recall watching the original V as a young child. My love of SciFi started fairly early in life (6 maybe 7 yr old). So too did my love of brunettes,

| reply to TigerLord I am looking forward to V! I didn't see the originals (series or movies) I thought about watching them during the SYFY marathon but did not want to "taint" the new series. Maybe it will be in class with Fringe, one can only hope.

| reply to Packeteers said by Packeteers :well, old BSG was REALLY old, while V was on a decade ago. still, you do have a point Actually V is over 20 years old. Just a few years older than the original BSG. Then again BSG came out of the cusp of the TV-disco generation so its pop-culture references seem extremely dated. The original V was smart in avoiding that sort of appeal on the first mini-series. V was an interesting animal back then. The first series was an almost perfect sci-fi television production with the right amount of intrigue, laser flashing action, scary monsters and drama.
The second series was longer and lost a little of it's charm along the way, but not enough to lose my love for it (in spite of the God-awful conclusion). There was more drama and character development, but at the same time more sensationalism along the lines of prime time soaps like Dynasty and shock bits like your average B-Movie.
The TV series proper... well... lets not talk about that. Any fan of V doesn't really like to think about that bastard child. |
