Onyone else on call 24/7 365?

I work for siemens IT solutions and my job requires me to be on call 24/7 365 minus PTO time. I have been doing this for a little over 3 years now. I never get a weekend off at all. Well, unless I take PTO time off. Anyway just wondering if anyone else is on call all year long too. I don't know anyone who is on call all year 24/7 like I am minus PTO or vacation time.

The company I work for currently, I am a manager for the highest tier team that handles all escalations as well as major infrastructure projects.

For my team (as well as the other teams) there is a rotation, but managers are always on call.

I may not be called on every night, but technically speaking, I'm on-call all the time.

Every job that I've had in the last 11 years, I've always been on-call in some form or another. No complaints here. I've always been compensated very well.

I have been. I did not get calls all the time. I did have to leave a wedding once. Obviously not my own, I am still alive

By "never get a weekend off" does that mean you are always on call or that there is something you get called for every weekend?

I'm on call for our clients 24/7/365. As well I handle all datacenter and technical emergencies, so that is a 24/7/365 gig as well.

Re: Anyone else on call 24/7 365?

On call 24/7-365. Have been for years. Its not to unusual.
One particular period I recall was going out to dinner with the family on Thursday nights. 5 weeks in a row I had to leave the table. Twice before the meal was served. Would have been real nice to have wireless and internet then. All our remotes were dial up, so I had to go home to repair.

Re: Onyone else on call 24/7 365?

Wasn't technically on call 24/7/365. However, I was often called outside of either normal business hours or my call rotation. It's the downside of having high expertise in certain critical products and intimate knowledge (near photographic memory) of customer configurations. It's also, because of this, that I've had people call or IM me about things months or years after I've stopped being responsible for their configurations (left a contract, changed employers, etc.).

For about 18 months (about seven years ago), SunCluster made me a lot of money in call pay. My wife *still* can't hear a early 2000s-style Nextel phone ring without shuddering. Then again, that period was nearly $30K in call pay. So, it meant she got several "consolation prizes".

This is why I majored in business in college and got a business job and not an IT job

I have been on call 24/7 for 12+ years since I graduated. Its not a big deal though. Never has been for me. Since I am the network admin, I am able to put technology in with redundant systems. In the last 3 years since I got this job, I can count on one hand how many times I have been woke up for a computer issue or had to leave to come into work for an emergency. Thats about 1 time a year or so.

Even before that we had remote access systems in place so I could remote in and fix things. For the 7 years previous to the last 3, I probably had to come into work after hours about 1-2 times a month. I didn't have PTO time either. If I took vacation, I still got called to support the network. The company I worked for had limited funds for redundancy and there were times they paid for it.

One thing I forgot to add is that I talked with my managers about working after hours. If I am here on a Saturday, they let me cut out early on a weekday or I get some other time off. They believe in comp time, and I recommend you talk to your managers about it as well. I believe most managers will be happy to give comp time out if you are pulling a lot of after hours work.

All in all, being on call isn't a problem if your IT department is well funded and you have the skills.

Count me in also 24/7 - 365. Although I don't often have to come in, it can happen at any time. That includes going to a different state if necessary.

Yep, I am as well. I've been on call 24/7 for 5 or 6 years. I'm used to it and I just use it as motivation to make sure I don't get woken up at 3AM. After all, if I do, I'm the one who likely created the problem so I view it as my medicine.

I'm an Automation Engineer for a power plant here in Southern California.

As long as i have this company blackberry and if anything goes wrong with one of the controls systems in any of our control rooms, i need to come in.....no matter what time it is.

My regular work hours are M-F from 7am-3pm, but i rarely ever get called in after hours.

I am 24/7 365.

The worse ever was getting an critical email notification after a hockey tournament during St Patrick's... For those that play hockey, you know how it gets... Luckily since we didnt have the parts and the backup systems kicked in, i didnt have to do anything, but show up and make sure everything was working.

My lesson: not to ever get FUBAR while being on a job with 24/7 365.

Yes, oncall 24/7/365.

Sometimes I even get called on my PTO, and vacations. The only times I have been on PTO and never gotten called is when I was out of the country, and phone doesn't work out there, which does not happen very often.

Wife doesn't like it to much.
