Hmm, things got better now but for weird reason my cable modem(?) went crazy. I got packet losses from it (192.168.100.1) and couldn't access its internal Web pages fully (never finished or doesn't load even in text mode browsers or without graphics) to get logs and statistics, even if I unplugged and replugged its power (same for my Linksys router).
Examples of pings from Linux/Debian box: --- 192.168.100.1 ping statistics --- 45 packets transmitted, 38 received, 15% packet loss, time 44052ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 2.063/2.109/2.296/0.067 ms
I did manage to get through to see logs very slowly (note had to power cycled the modem earlier hence the "time not established" and couldn't get the older logs before that cycle):
Anyways, things were starting to get slow after 10:00 PM PST and got worse. Since I noticed my boxes to 192.168.100.1 showed packet losses (no problems to my router), I thought I had a bad/dying CAT5 network cable so I tried another one and a shorter one but still had the same problem.
I only had this Ambit/Ubee U10C018 cable modem since 10/4/2008 from the local TWC office. Is my cable modem already going bad? Maybe a known issue?
I was going to connect the modem to my updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 box, but I couldn't find the USB cable for the modem. I cannot find it in its coardboard box and cannot remember if it came with one. Did it?
Also, this is the first time I have seen things go wacky. Thank you in advance. :) |

| I looked for that modem on line and the data sheet says the USB interface is 1.1. That's about 12Mbps, as I recall. That's not really as good as a NIC with 100Mbps. Doesn't your XP Pro SP3 have a network card? -- In reality, there is no such thing as a clean human being. |

I think I resolved the problem. Dying router. I switched to my old Netgear RT311 router and things were better. |

Hmm, slow again and losing packets to the gateway.

I have been going through the same torture for a few months now, but I use a D-Link router, ip 192.168.0.1. As of three days ago, my net scans revealed an "unknown device" router with the ip 10.217.64.1. I could still access the config page with the old ip, but none of the passwords worked anymore. I lost service every, oh 5 minutes for about 30 sec-2min and then repeat. It was driving me and my family crazy. Finally, after exhaustive research, on a hunch I entered 10.217.64.30 into my browser, and was brought to an Ambit login page. It stated literally that the sign-in was admin. I don't trust WiFi, so I opened the same window in two browsers simultaneously, with the Activity list open, and noted that the first one to load contained a different set of load files than the second, and the source differed.
I have road-runner charlotte nc... carolina.rr.com I've also found my ip connecting to some ips which I know have no business connecting, and always from ports 52000-the 60000s. Roadrunner tells us it is our router, but I've noticed that sometime recently three cables from the local routing hub (behind my house between three others) were cut, and a new ATT broadband service box was installed, with a cable running from the hub to it (two different companies if I'm not mistaken, right?)
So, am I a paranoid individual like my family tells me, or is something strange likely going on. It just all seems wrong to me. |
