2 edits | Which Linksys WRT54 router to get?
Hi!
My old wired Linksys BEFSX41 v1 router died and I had to use my older Netgear RT311 router to use the Internet. I am looking for a new router from a local retail store (Best Buy, Fry's, Office Max, Staples, etc.) to buy tomorrow night. I heard many positive comments on WRT54. Any good one to get? I don't need speed and will still use an old Linksys WAP11 (connected) because some old wireless devices and computers do not have anything higher than WEP (yes, I know it is easily crackable).
Any good ones from »www.salescircular.com/ca/compute···np.shtml ?
Thank you in advance. |

You could also look at the new "N" class wireless routers as well. |

| reply to Phil I think I will get a WRT54GL (»www.frys.com/product/4703979?sit···_RSLT_PG ) from local Fry's store tonight. Nice price ($59.99) and in stock.
Can't I use the third party firmware with this one (will use stock for now since I don't have time to tweak it for a while)? What's different between GS 7.2 (Fry's didn't have any WRT54GS) and GL (does it have a version number I need to look for?)? -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. 1 edit | The WRT54GL is a rebranded WRT54G v4 and can run almost any flavor of 3rd-party firmware available (Tomato and DD-WRT are two popular choices). The WRT54GL will most likely be a v1.1, but any version (1.0 or 1.1) will be fine. Subsequent versions of the WRT54G (versions 5 - 8) use a different chip and have half the memory as previous versions limiting 3rd-party firmware availability. I wouldn't bother with any WRT54GS after version 3 which can only be had used these days. |

I just need to use it as if it is a wired router. All the old wireless devices except one still use WEP. For now, I have no time to tweak/reconfigure the one that can do WPA and going to use an old external Linksys WAP11 connected for those old devices (no driver updates and old Windows like 98 SE, 2000 SP4, PowerBook G4, etc.).
I just downloaded »downloads.linksysbycisco.com/dow···code.zip. »downloads.linksysbycisco.com/dow···otes.txt was interesting. It hasn't been updated since July 14th, 2008. The stock firmware doesn't get new updates anymore?
Just curious. What can stock firmware not do that third parties can do? I only plan to use it as a simple router for Internet and connect various computers and devices on LAN (also have a Netgear DS108 switch and a Linksys WAP11). I do want to be able to ping my router, good uptime, good security protection, etc. like I did with my old two routers. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. | antdude, for what you are going to use it for, there is no real gain by flashing third party firmware, especially as you are not even planning on using it wireless. Nothing "wrong" with doing so, but you are not likely to gain any tangible benefit by doing so.
This is not exactly a very recent router, so the firmware is stable, and not likley to be updated often at this point.
The WRT54GL is a solid, time-tested router, and should serve you well. -- Deeds, not words |

Excellent. Stable and old (as has been out for years). I will use its wireless later on when I have time and more devices.
I might use both. Keep WAP11 as old devices and use WPA for others that can use it.
I also need to allow pings and I hope this router lets me IRC without losing connections like Linksys BEFSX41 v1 router (had to tell Linux to keep alive! See »IRC keeps getting disconnected with this Linksys BEFSX41... for that old issue from last year). -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. | reply to antdude As of late last night, it is up and running. It didn't have the latest firmware. I thought I bricked it during the firmware upgrade, but only needed a physical reset. Whew!!
Wow, Linksys used the same web page design from many years ago like the old Linksys router!
One of these days, I will have to check out the third parties whenever I have free time. I disabled wireless for now to play later on. I forget. Is WPA2+PK the best one to use if possible and how close can two wireless be together physically and channels? Currently, both WAP11 and router sit side by side. Don't have room for them to be separated yet. -- Ant @ »antfarm.ma.cx and »aqfl.net. Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. Use the forum! The stock Linksys firmwares for the WRT54 series are notoriously unstable and buggy.
I think I had my WRT54GL up and running without a reboot or reset for 172 consecutive days with DD-WRT. Then the power went out. I only need a basic router like I had for Netgear RT311 and Linksys BEFSX41 v1. My WRT54G (not the GL...I bought my GL specifically to run 3rd party firmware) used to crash frequently and need a re-boot. It also used to keep half-open connections open forever. So if you were using something that was making and breaking a lot of connections, like P2P, the memory would overflow.
Search this forum for other their threads on Tomato Vs. DD-WRT. Both have their fans. Both are excellent solutions for the WRT54GL. Slightly different feature sets. But both stable and excellent. I'm running Tomato now because I like the bandwidth and usage monitoring in it. -- Any claim that the root of a problem is simple should be treated the same as a claim that the root of a problem is Bigfoot. | AntDude, Ian seems to be comparing apples and oranges (Ian, what WRT54 version?). The GL original firmware is Linux-based and from what I saw, not setup all that badly. But I'm like most here...
Trouble is, everyone seems to buy a GL to run another firmware. If you tax a router, please do report how the original WRT54GL firmware runs.
Since WRT54G version 5, Linksys firmware is compiled based on VxWorks. THAT sounds like the kind of "barely-good-enough" firmware I think Ian describes. |

1 edit | I have a early version of the WRT54GS - run stock firmware - no real issues. Maybe a reboot or 2 in the couple of years O have owned it.
I do not do any torrents or P2P on it at all, which is where a lot of the problems came from. -- Brian
