Jack the 'Pole Tax' through the roof

If the state of Mass really wants to screw verizon, the solution is quite simple. Make the 'Pole Tax' $1000.00 per year, per pole. That will effectively make the VALUE of all the assets Verizon has in MASS worthless, and of course, Verizon WON'T pay the tax, so the state can SEIZE all the assets when they don't. Guess what, Verizon won't be able to SELL anything either, because no-one would touch it.

THAT's the solution for ALL the megacorp ISP's. TAX Comcast, TAX Verizon, TAX em ALL out of existence, then take over the assets, and run the network as part of a muni effort. If ALL the states did that, the government could get all their assets for FREE, and guess what, if you GOT all those assets for FREE, even the government could run them with much better speeds/lower prices than any bloods sucking fat cat megacorp slimball can.

I've figured it out! the best way to bring DEMOCRACY back into the US. Take over all the telco assets, and then let private companies LEASE those assets to sell services.

Too bad for you that the courts and the US Constitution prohibits states from confiscating private assets. Your Final Solution would never be upheld by the Supreme Court.

Well, they guy's name is karlmarx :P

The solution is not taxing them out of existence. The solution is shattering them all into a million tiny companies so that they lose the control that comes with being megacorporations.

Auction it to collect the "taxes", with the bidder qualification terms including being a co-op/non profit.

I guess with a screen name like karlmarx, I shouldn't expect too much from you. Your idea may work in getting the state to tax them out. However, you will also be the first ones screaming about why no one wants to do business in your state. If Taxachusetts will do that for an ISP, they will do it to anyone else in a business that they want to. Any business with a brain will steer clear of Massachusetts, and rightfully so.

You make the claim that the government can run it better if they take over. We would quickly find out about how stupid that idea is. When the government has no competition, like would be the case in Massachusetts if they did such a thing, they give nothing but bad service. Think of the DMV, the post office, etc. Muni providers are still in competition with corporations, so they have had to be competitive. However, I am probably wasting my time with karlmarx, you think that the government is the only thing that can be trusted. Even though they don't have to earn money by being competitive, they just have to forcefully take it from the tax payers and anyone else they feel like.

I have many family in MA, and I haven't heard them complain about the DMV in YEARS. The post office? Damn, where else in the world can you get a letter anywhere in the US in 3 days for about $.40 cents? The USPS isn't the most efficient service in the world, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY ARE FOR. They exist to service EVERY ADDRESS in the US. Try shipping a letter via UPS, and you'll pay $15.00 for the same 3 days you get from USPS. High Speed Access, like the USPS, is a SERVICE which should be provided to EVERY HOUSE for a reasonable price. UPS and FEDEX can do the same thing, but since they are 'for profit' companies, they charge 30 times as much for the same service you get from the government.

I don't EXPECT a muni run broadband to be as effective as a private company, BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT IT'S FOR. It exists to provide a needed service for every citizen of the US. That's why the government should own the backbone and the last mile, and run fiber to every home, just like electricity and water (with a few exceptions of course).

They exist to offer a service to those practical to reach within the area they wish to serve. By the way, you do know that it is illegal to compete with the post office for first class mail service. I would be willing to bet that a private company could do a much better job. Even if that company were more expensive, they would still get lots of business from people wanting the option to not deal with a government bureaucracy.

I stand by my comment pertaining to the DMV and post office. I absolutely hate dealing with either one. They do as little as they have to as slowly as they can. While there is some competition for the USPS, people gladly use. Are you going to go to another DMV for your license, no you can't. As for the post office, they are in a serious deficit these days, and jack the cost of stamps up at a rate that would make the cable companies proud. The post office isn't having to pay ESPN like a cable company, just fat cat government employees.

As for your eclectic and water comment, water doesn't reach everyone. There are still plenty of areas not served by a muni water system.
