I was sitting here, watching Animal Planet, and caught the ending of a Suddenlink commerical.
They were saying, they have invested 50 million dollars in this area.
Wow...
On what?
This is a serious question, and a serious debate and information topic I'd love to see get some real answers and feedback from SL.
As some of you will know, I recently dropped my SL cable package, in favor of keeping my DSL.
I do miss the download speeds.
Aside from the issues I talked about in another topic, I will ask, if they have spent all that money, in this area, on something, why on earth are we still stuck with sub-par upload speeds? -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

1 edit | I wanted to make this a separate post...
I think I can, in part, answer my own question.
I was watching another SL commercial, and noticed they refer to themselves, as the fastest internet in town..
Maybe they spent the 50 million, but have not turned up the speeds yet, because the other local provider either can not, or has not yet offered anything higher than 768 upstream...
Wouldn't it be better to be first? -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240

| reply to gatorkram I highly doubt they could support any faster speeds at this point in time. My internet speeds are all over the place, and I hardly ever get the 12 Mbps that I pay for.
It was absolutely horrible trying to watch the ECU football game that they only showed on ESPN360.com. That, right there, just shows how crummy Suddenlink's network is.
There's no telling what those idiots spent $50 million on. |

| I also laugh (what else) when I see their commercials. They are funnier to me because their quality is so bad, I hope alot of that money didn't go their marketing department. Looks to me like they spent a ton on that new call center in Greenville.
My neighbor (Rocky Mount) is a field tech supervisor, and I was discussing it very quickly with him a few weeks ago. He gave me the corporate mantra about all the money they were spending on the head-end (I don't know cable tech or lingo). He referenced all the changes it would bring, 70-80 HD channels, VOD, 20+MB speeds, but here was what made me furious...this is all planned to be completed 18 months out.
If accurate, that speaks volumes to me that the total lack of a competitor gives Suddenlink no incentive to push any upgrades out. I hear people talk crap all the time about TWC, but everytime I go to Raleigh and see all the HD they have, I just feel sad.
Oh, and if I hear one more time about them launching home security, I swear I may cancel everything on principal alone. Who the **** cares about home security? Give me some damn HD or upload increases. I guess it's a big deal because Eastern NC is so crime infested. |

| reply to gatorkram 50 million dollars in tax write-off deductions more than likely. SL sponsors a lot of local area events, nice office spaces, cool communication mechanisms for the top execs, then there is the advertising they shove down your throat, they are also investing in community development programs (whatever that means), the money spent on developing their wonderful "security" offerings, etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if none of the money was actually used to increase their infrastructure's capacity and capabilities. This is completely off subject but here is a good question, if I'm already a SL subscriber why do I have to endure their commercials and promo deals every 5 minutes when watching the tube? I swear every commercial I see pushes me that much closer to leaving SL... |

| reply to gatorkram All of you have answered the question and not known it.
All of the commercial time is billable seconds and the price of that time fluctuates depending on programing/viewership. Since their advertising revenue has gone down (economy) they have to fill it. So they have broadcast Suddenlink commercials to fill the time and bill Suddenlink Corporate.
There's your 50 mil right there, or their just getting ready for CenturyTel
That being said my Internet is way over 12MB right now. |

| reply to gatorkram Seriously gatorkram,
I've been reading DSL reports for years and lurking these forums and one thing is constant. You're NEVER happy. It seems as though you want them to run the fiber pipe straight to your house there in Winterville.
That being said, you switch to Centurylink, love it, now miss the speeds. So you're willing to sacrifice reliability for speed? I'm assuming that's why you left SL in the first place.
Is there anything that will ever make you happy or is the constant quest for the best HSI in Greenville just a hobby of yours? |

Seriously considering calling SL business, as I hear they offer higher upstream speeds.
Using the internet, surely is a hobby for me. And getting the best value for my money, is also important to me.
What I really dislike, is paying to much for to little, like most people. When I see other areas of the country, with higher speeds, and lower prices, I get pissed.
I've seen many references, to the idea, that if one person is upset, and complaining, and making it known, you can bet 1000 other people feel the same way, and say nothing.
What would make me happy? More speed, more reliability, and a fair price. Right now, neither company is offering me that, IMO, so I will continue to voice my opinions on the matter.
And yes, damn it, run the backbone right into my closet.. -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |

| reply to BX1018 I just find it odd that people who are no longer with SL continue posting in the SL forum. Not saying its wrong just odd. The only thing I really want to complain about with SL is the slowdowns at night... really the only thing annoying me. Okay I lied, the horrible webmail/my suddenlink page interface is annoying as well but not a deal breaker.
My employer uses a GB link so needless to say I'm a little spoiled when it comes to bandwidth but I do not try and compare the two. |

| Well......if it'll make some of you happy, I'm a current Suddenlink subscriber and have been since before Cox Cable hanndled cable here. I have several things I could complain about :P Mostly not getting enough value for the very high prices we pay in Greenville.
Keep up the good work gatorkram |

Keep up the good work gatorkram I was so disappointed, when I found out cox was selling this area.
I was always very happy with them.
Man, it's been like 5 years or so now, I used to have their SOHO package, in the Gainesville, FL market. Was 5/768 back then.
Sad to say, that's all I can STILL get here now, so many years later, although that isn't SLs fault, as they offer 12/768...
I have to wonder, what's up with the 768 speed max around here. How so 1990s is that -- Give me bandwidth or give me death! »/testhistory/661871/4f240 |
