Re: Clear in Chicago

I am in Evanston. I am finally getting all 5 lights on my home modem to light up and this is my latest speed test:

For five lights you should be getting better speeds than that. I get those speeds (and better sometimes) with three lights.

I am in Evanston too. This morning (Sunday) had five lights and 2 MB/s downloads similar to you. This evening varies between 3 and 4 lights but downloads are 7 MB/s ... go figure ... I read that Clear is going to open a store across from Radio Shack in Downtown Evanston.

Here in south Naperville I have 3 lights lit (fluctuates between 3 and 4) and I get this speed:

Tweaked my wireless router and the speeds improved.

Modem and router are on the second floor in my closet; my laptop is on the lower level.

It takes some time to monkey around and find the right place and position for the modem, set up the wireless router with settings that work and make sure the modem and router are NOT next to each other. In my case moving them farther apart improved speeds significantly.

Closest one is 1.04 miles to your east. The one that's pointed at you is 1.11 miles on a tank to your south.

@luhs.org

Found the one on the tank, thanks. They want me to go through customer service before I can get a truck roll. I have no confidence either will work. My block seems to be a dead zone for the signal. I now think it would penetrate my house if it was strong enough outside. The strength drops off as soon as I hit my block, By the time I get to my driveway, its gone completely.

I'm in Lakeview by School & Marshfield. Best signal I can get so far is 3 bars. Also have had several days over the past couple weeks where the signal just completely drops for hours (like right now) or I have a signal but 50+% packet loss. Are they still building up the towers in my area?

So mysteriously I get home to three bars of signal last night after talking with a cancellation person in Account Services yesterday morning. But, the best download I could manage was about 2.4 . Averaged 1.8 . If I'm a mile away from the tower, should I be able to get more? I'm remoting into my home machine and the modem is seeing RSSI -81 and CINR of 9. Highest I've seen either was -79 and 11. Am I stuck at ~2.4 or is there anything that needs to be changed with my account?
I'm on the unlimited Home and Mobile for $50 a month. I understood that to mean whatever speed I could connect to the tower at...

It seems there are a lot of things to take into consideration with the speed of your connection. Time of day seems to be one of them. With three bars, I was getting on average of about 4-5mps. Just now I did a speedtest, and this is what I'm getting:

Would make sense as there would be more interference during the day. How many wireless routers are in your area?

Finally found my login info. (formally newcustomer)

I count at least three routers, not including my own. My own runs at 5 Ghz with the G bands only used sparingly for one older laptop. But those routers are on 24/7, so if they're interfering it should happen all the time. The tower I'm connecting to is running at 2.6 Ghz, though there are few behind it in the list at 2.5.
Seems like speeds drop like crazy during the day and I only get over 2 after nightfall. What else could be in the range to interfere with the signal?

i only got 800mbps where i went to the mall where they had signal

i canceled my service..still waiting for the UPS return label to arrive in the mail

I wouldn't go that far as to say false advertising, because most people are getting good speeds. I think it is safe to say that your mileage may vary. Test it out first and if it doesn't work for you, try a different solution.

I just installed service today at 4:30PM in Elk Grove. The nearest tower is .25 miles North of my house. I am getting fluctuations between 3-5 bars on the modem. Speed tests are averaging between 2.9-3.5 down. Max was 4 down. Up is .6-.8

Best signal seems to be with the logo pointed North. I will get 5 bars for a tiny amount of time and it will hop around randomly between 3-5. Pings are good between 55-100.

Underwhelmed with download speed.

Linenoise, I'm in Park Forest, middle of Apache Street. What can I expect for clearwire? Where is the closest tower?

Stooge:

You're on the fringe of coverage from towers to you North and West. The tower to the North is your best bet at .86 miles ~4500'

At that point, I wouldn't expect much. Buy a modem and try it out.

LineNoise,
First, thank you for your assistance!
I am in Aurora, just off Ogden and Eola, near Waubonsie HS. Where is the nearest clear tower? I am having issues with my desktop modem. If I have 2 or 4 bars the speed is the same. (can't get 5 bars anywhere)
Thanks again.

How do you determine where the towers are? Is there a map of where all the towers are located?

youth6

When I went to one of their mall kiosks they had an internal google map with all the towers in the area.

I don't think the service is for me though as uploads are only 1/3rd of what they advertise & download speeds are inconsistent like a roller coaster with .6 Mbps to nearly 4 Mbps on a 3/1 plan at times compared to my stable DSL. Pings at least 3 times as high in gaming. This with 3 to 4 bars & two towers around 1mi away.

The ping is fine for most games

I know I have no problems playing any of my games
