| [MLB] Do you like instant replay?
First, I have felt for MANY years now that the "quality" of MLB umpires has gone down the "crapper" so to speak, and that instant replay is a necessity now.
My main question is this...
Do you think it helps or hinders the game.
If the "officials" were of a better caliber, I would NOT support instant replay, but as I mentioned before, given the horrible umps we have now, it is a necessity that I think needs to be expanded beyond the scope it has now. Maybe stopping short of balls and strikes, it is needed for just about everything else. -- RIAA/MPAA... Bite me!!!! In constant search for intelligent life on Earth! |

| Yes, they should review certain plays in baseball.
I've seen many bad calls by the ump's this post season.....especially the one just the other night where Ryan Howard trapped the baseball.
He didn't catch it on the fly and he damn well knows it..LOL. |

| reply to jwersan Officials in the MLB are by far the worst in the 4 major sports and by far get the most number of calls wrong per game. Yes, instant replay should be used to review fair/foul balls, home runs, safe/out calls at the plate, and fly out catches that look close to hitting the ground. Managers should be able to throw challenge flags just like in the NFL. |

| reply to jwersan I'll tell you why the current implementation of reply in MLB is a good idea, and they should expand it a little. Not for balls and strikes, but for other close plays.
When I can sit on my couch, 7 beers into a 12 pack and call the play correctly in real-time, while a trained umpire, completely sober, misses it from 2 feet away, then yes, there is a big problem.
These umpires have to get better. Some of the calls I saw in the LAA/NYY series was just absolutely pitiful.
I'd prefer the game without any replay stuff. Until these umpires get their eyes checked and some re-training, I think it's better to have the replays than not. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin |

| reply to jwersan Yes. I wish they would expand it. This argument about it taking too long is laughable since it could take 1-2 minutes for most calls. This argument about it being part of the game is a joke since the game has changed already drastically from 50 years ago AND it should be about GETTING IT RIGHT and not accepting stupidity because we did for so many years beforehand. |

i don't follow baseball that much but i do watch the playoffs . i noticed the both TBS and FOX have their own version of strike box.. and quiet a few times the umpire would get the wrong call.. a ball that was clearly in the strike zone..do you think they can review this and complain to the officials later? Sometimes a strike really changes the game.. |

| reply to jwersan I'm probably in minority, but I don't like instant replay.
With football, it's gotten a bit better lately, but I hate situations where they get the replay wrong (it's happened plenty) or there's a play that can't be replayed for some stupid reason. That bothers me way more than just getting the call wrong.
If replay is done, I prefer the coach's challenge system as it adds a little strategy to the game and you can limit what has to be reviewed. |

It is cool when the managers are berating the umps when they make a dumb call. Frothing at the mouth spitting on them and then kicking sand all over them and then the sad sack ump ejects them. Kinda like the mods here.
It seems like some of the confrontations are almost planned and just for show. Maybe the coach and the ump plan it even. |

1 edit | reply to jwersan My normal answer would be no but since watching the playoffs and the world series games I now would say they need to do something. It is a shame at the amount of bad calls being made by the umpires and even the umpire behind the plate is so far off on calling balls and strikes.
There should be no way that a team does well enough all season to advance to the world series only to lose the series due to a bad call...Not that it happened but I am amazed by how many bad calls are taking place. I admit I haven't watched but maybe one or two games all season long so I don't know if this is something that has been happening for some time now or just for these playoffs and world series games but what I am seeing is ridicules.
Another thing I would like to see changed is the automatic given out at second base on a double play where so many times the second baseman or shortstop doesn't even touch the bag at second or throws the ball quickly to first hoping to complete a double play but when he throws the ball he hasn't even stepped on second base at all......I know this has been a 'gimme' out for as long as I can recall but enough is enough...In football if a receiver is wide open in the end zone and the quarterback lofts him a pass for a easy TD but the receiver just barely steps out of bounds in the endzone it is ruled incomplete so same should be done on the double play in baseball....Why should the play be a so called automatic out call at second when the base has never been touched by the infielder? That alone could change the outcome of a game..
Enough of these bullshit missed calls...I'm all for reply now but don't know how to implement it without further thought but something needs to be done. What I'm seeing now blows! |

1 edit | reply to jwersan One other thing about the blown balls and strike calls by the home plate umpire...for years it has always been said "well at least he is calling them bad for both teams" but I now say so what?
Let's say it is game 7 in Philly, bottom of the 9th, two outs but Philly has the bases loaded, Yankees leading 3-2 and Chase Utley is the batter and he has a 3-2 count on him. Ball four and the game will be tied but the umpire calls the 3-2 pitch which is clearly high and outside STRIKE 3 and the Yankees win the World Series.
How could anyone justify that devastating bad call by saying " well the umpire during the game made some strike calls on some Yankee hitters that were clearly balls" ? |
