But i think it cost me around $21 as i transferd the plates over.

I love living in NY..Specifically here on eastern Long Island but these increases being mandated on us during these difficult economic times is leading me to think more and more about moving elsewhere. :( We already pay some of the highest property taxes and utilities in the country but yet it seems not a week goes by without us all hearing of another corrupt politician living high on the hog off of taxpayers money or a lawyer getting on a school payroll so he or she can get a NY State retirement and on and on it goes....

Anyway, regarding the new fee for NY license plates.

Drivers required to buy new license plates

An additional fee adopted in this year's state budget is inspiring a lot of road rage. Starting in April 2010, all drivers in New York will be required to buy brand new license plates at $25 a set, regardless of whether they're driving a new car or not. That's $10 more than the current price. If you want to keep your same license plate number, it will cost you another $20. "Why? Why do we need new plates?" asked Larry Hughes of Onondaga Hill.

The state claims this is for safety because the reflectivity on many of the license plates issued in 2001 has worn out. But what about states like Delaware that have had the same plates since 1970? "I think it's another way for the state to get more money," said Frazier Hunt of Skaneateles.

He's absolutely right. There are 12 million registered drivers in the state, and the State Department of Motor Vehicles estimates this will bring in $129 million. Senator John DeFrancisco tells Action News the money should come from cutting spending, saying: "This is just one of more than 100 fees that were adopted in last year's budget to satisfy the insatiable desire of New York City Democrat state leaders to spend the money of hard-working New Yorkers."

License and registration fees will also go up 25%. Starting September 1st, the price of a driver's license will increase from $50 to $62.50. Drivers at the D.M.V. say the timing couldn't be worse. "With the economy and no jobs and stuff like that, and job losses, I'm on unemployment right now to tell you the truth, I can barely afford it," said Jermaine Sterling of Syracuse.

"People are hurting now, people are just scraping to get by," Hughes said. "Why should they have to buy new plates if they don't need them?"

Drivers won't have to run out and buy new plates on April 1st. The update will take place over a two-year period as drivers renew their registrations

removed posted : Your friend in Harris County can put down whatever value he wants on the title transfer form. What he's taxed on, however, is determined by the state's database.

Chances are that Fort Bend simply went with your value since it was over what the state believes the car is worth. Have you tried entering your VIN and mileage on the site to see what the SPV shows for you? I've played with it by putting in the VIN and mileage of some of the cars I own, and the state always seems to show a much lower value than what I could get if I sold the car to a private party (or even a dealer with enough haggling).
--
irc.removed.us - #dslr

sailor posted :
said by Fir_Na_Tine:

New Jersey is like that. I bought my friends 87' Blazer years ago for $7500 and had to pay taxes on it (6%). We tried to write up to bills of sale, one for the purchase price and another for $1 to try and get out of paying the tax. But the state sent me a letter saying they were going to send someone out to appraise the truck. So I had to pay the taxes on the actual purchase price. Although I registered it as a wagon instead of a truck and it saved me $100.

Please no lectures on how I tried to avoid paying taxes and I am a bad person for it , everybody that buys something online and doesn't report it is doing same thing.

Up until recently here in NY it was quite common to hear of buyers getting a bill of sale by the seller indicating a much lower price than actually paid. But what I understand now is if the vehicle is less than 10 years old the DMV will check the NADA guide and if the bill of sale you present is way below that they will give you two choices:

1) Either pay sales tax on what the clerk tells you to pay going by the NADA guide if you want to complete the transaction and get your plates today or

2) Take a form back to the seller and have them check off they sold you the car for less than book value. And both buyer and seller must sign that form. And then you must make another trip back to the DMV.

Its my understanding that many are just paying up on the spot after being presented with the two options above in order to get their plates and get out the door as fast as possible.

I personally have no problem with paying my fair share of taxes but again, I feel the procedure to charge sales tax every time the car changes hands in just not fair.

In my case yesterday on a used vehicle for $8,750 I am just shy of paying another $1,000 to just legally get plates for it..Not to mention insurance cost and emissions/safety inspection...I would think it adds to the practice of many driving with an unregistered vehicle.
And when I think of how many times I read of someone locally getting ticketed driving an unregistered vehicle I have to wonder maybe some feel its worth not going through the legal way with the high cost involved. Its not like they go to jail for driving an unregistered vehicle..They basically pay a fine which probably is way less than what I paid yesterday to register my used vehicle...

With more and more states across the country in dire need of money I believe many more will raise fees to register a car just like NY raised its fees this past September. I believe Florida adds on a $200.00 fee to register a vehicle for the first time unless you are transferring tags from one registered vehicle to another.

It is always we the consumer who get to pay for others being financially irresponsible.

Fir_Na_Tine posted : New Jersey is like that.

--
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."
-Jimi Hendrix

sailor posted : I recently purchased two used Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. Today I go to register one of them...a 2005 with a purchase price of $8,750.00 One of the things I have always had a case of the ass with here in NY is every time someone buys a used vehicle they must pay NY sales tax on it which is over 8%...8.625% for me based on the county I live in. I always argue this is double taxation and even triple taxation and on and on..

If you buy a new car here in NY you pay sales tax on it..Then if you sell it a year later the person buying it from you pays sales tax again on the selling price and so if the vehicle has 6 different owners over a period of time each owner must pay sales tax on the purchase price...There are gift exemptions but my post is dealing with the fact that even though the vehicle if used you still must pay sales tax on the purchase price...

So today I take the bill of sale showing purchase price of $8,750.00 ( I didn't buy the car locally but from another state and had it trucked to me )..I take a copy of my proof of insurance that was emailed to me while still on the phone with my insurance company adding the vehicle to my policy, my filled out forms including registering and putting in for a NY title and the clear title from the party I purchased the vehicle from in Chicago..

NY as of September raised all their motor vehicle fees and I won't break down all the different fees but the total I had to pay today was $ 958.69 out the door..NY Sales tax and the other fees involved in registering and getting plates for a vehicle..That includes a two year registration based on a yearly cost of $34.50...They gave me the plates and a 10 temp sticker for emissions testing..That must be done within 10 days and that cost will add another $37.50 to the total.

So how is it where you live? What state do you live in and do you have to pay sales tax on a used vehicle along with other registration fees? Would you know what it would cost you to register a used car with a sale price of $8,750.00 in your state?
